hey all, i finally decided to take the SW plunge. I have done freshwater off and on for years but alwase wanted to do sw. I have lived in south sacramento my whole life, I came across rc and this forum/club. So i thought id post pics of my new tank. Its a 40g display with homemade 20g sump/refuge, single overflow w/gravity fed return (STILL TO LOUD!!) , mag7 pump, DIY modded seaclone skimmer (i know they blow but since i modded, its grabbing and tanks been up only 5 days) , and 2 maxi-jet 400 powerheads not in tank yet. please let me know what you think, any suggestions, comments, whatever. also, im looking for a lighting upgrade, so if you know anyone selling something used in the $100 range, lemmie know.

I would paint that return black also. That white PVC sticks out big time against that black back

Krylon Fusion for plastic is reef safe, I use it myself

lol i got it from a guy in off of howe and northrop, maybe its your brother in law? Good idea kdblove, i think i will. I have to take it out and drill some holes in it to dissipate large bubbles to reduce some noice.....well i think it will work. Ill paint then.

No, he lives in Auburn. I guess he might have sold it to the guy you got it from.

I see its making its rounds:)

Did you paint the canopy and stand? looks much better than the green

How did you come to the conclusion that particular brand of paint was reef safe? I would just wait a few months and ignore it, by the time you know it, it will be covered in coralline and you wont know the difference.

I use it! I painted all my overflows with this paint and my return. tank has been running for a year and a half now!

How long had it been up? I don't see any critters yet. Lets get some critters in there :).

Welcome to the most expensive hobby I have ever come across.

Welcome to the club! Are you planning to meet your fellow geeks at the club meeting? How long into the cycle are you? Any ideas yet on what you are going to run in there?

No, no critters yet. Going to test my water friday. Should be done with the cycle then. And i just got a good deal on some used 36" power compacts thanks to petes97 (Made my day!). If all goes well im planning on mosty inverts, zoa's, and a few corals. Im thinking some frogspawn, a small brain coral, scattered blue, orange, and striped mushrooms, lotsa lotsa zoa's of all variations, cespitularia, and lots more zoa's. OH and a bubble tip and mated maroon clowns for my girl. Im gonna need more rock, im just waiting for LFS to get some i like.

well its 60g total and i only have 35lbs but its not the ratio thats buggin me i just want a few better looking rocks. I want to make the base out of larger rock for more stability than smaller ones stacked. Many say to glue them, but i would like to be able to rearange lol.

didnt know mars was an actual club, im not a member but i might like to sit in on one of your meetings one day when i get my tank a little farther along. What do you talk about at meetings and where they at? how do you become a member? I hope i dont have to run across american river college naked wearing a showercap as an initiation lol.

Drop me an email and we can figure out a time to make the swap. You're more than welcome to come down and check out both my tanks too.

bobbyblank - when your ready for some coral let me know i can toss some shrooms, a frag of frogspawn and what ever else i might find in my tank you might want.
