New non-photosynthetic tank

Now could we try starting a coldwater reef forum?.....I know lots of cool places to get really neat stuff!

I'm really happy with this forum! But coldwater is definitely a different game.

You'll probably like these pictures its a Mediterranean reef kept at a lower temperature I believe 62 to 64 degrees Fahrenheit. Its packed with azoos like gorgonians and cerantius sp.

Perhaps the serpent stars appear purple because they're slightly fluorescent? Instead of only reflecting the red light around them (of which there's almost none) they "manufacture" some of their own out the available blue light.

Great tank!

Here is a new FTS for the month of April.

No, they are rock rubble from other, well established tanks. Sort of a cheat to get lots of pods and stuff into the tank.

If you look I have been slowly removing them from this tank for the last month. I figure anything that was going to jump off the rocks has had plenty of time to disperse into the tank.

I have no snails in this tank. Algae is not an issue, so I focused my clean up crew as detrivores and carnivores.

very nice set-up! I'm excited to see how this tank progresses.

That cold-water tank link is pretty sweet too! Half the reason I love reefs (tanks and diving) is the warmth though! :)

Good job! I have the same yellow gorgonias for about 2 months now. The branches are getting thin and there is no more polyp extension for about one week now. I have been feeding them spray dried phytoplankton and Invert food made by Ocean Nutrition . I wanted to ask about your flow. I had good PE after really blasting them with 2 tunze 6025. They responded well to this. The branches were wiggling in the flow. Perhaps you could describe it also as a slow vibration of the branches. I think it may have been to strong. Can you explain the movement of your branches so i can learn how your flow is on the gorgonias?

Here is a video of my tank with about half the gorgonians opened up to feed.

You can see the movment of the branches pretty good if you expand the video to full screen.
I have about 30X flow in the tank from a pair of Korallia #3 powerheads.
You can see that some of the gorgonians are pretty much being blasted ny the flow
and all are constantly moving.

I only have actinic lights over the tank, so I apologize for the video being so dark,
but with white polyps and 130w of actinic, the tank looks great to the human eye.

Thank you. I really like this particular tank.

I still have both of the Arrow crabs you saw in the video. And the largest of the Coral Banded shrimp. Originally I had about 8 Arrow crabs and three CBS. My scorpionfish ate all but the largest of the CBS and Arrow crabs and one Arrow crab that was very small has evaded being eaten so far.

Whenever they moult, I look for the scorpionfish to get lucky.

Today I decided to make a short video demonstrating the condition of the tank. This was set up at the very end of January, and has been regularly fed and topped off. Outside of that, I barely do anything to the tank.

You have an awesome reef. I love that it is different from the typical rock pile and that you are trying something new. Also I think it is very cool that you collected most of your reefs inhabitants. Rarely do you hear a reef keeper say, "Well when I saw them diving _________," and this adds character to your tank.

He's been pretty quiet on his club forum and the last two meetings I attended he didn't so he may be off diving some place warm :)
