New Officer Elections!

Hi guys!

First of all, I would like to thank our current officers for all their work on SWAM functions, events, and fundraisers. It was awesome to have Barry down recently, and visits by Anthony Calfo and others have been worth their weight in gold. They wouldn't have happened without the dedication of our fearless leadership...! <grin>

Recently, it has come up that perhaps we need to have new officer elections because our poor officers need a break. If you would like to run for a post, please add on your intention to run for an office to this thread. In two weeks, we'll vote on seperate threads for each post. IE, there will be a thread for President, Treasurer, Secretary, and VP.

If you would like to nominate someone for a post, you may do so, but they must also post that they accept the nomination before voting starts. This way, we don't elect anyone who does not wish to serve the club in this way. It's a lot of work to be an officer, and does take alot of time! :D

Folks who would like to run for a post need to be current members of SWAM. Also, voting will be restricted to current members of SWAM. If you are not currently a member of SWAM but would like to run for office or have a say in the voting, please see Hedonist's thread and sign up. We would love to have you!!! http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=969693

I am also working on a charter. If you would like to help, or have comments regarding your views on term limits, frequency of elections, candidacy qualification, or other thoughts please send me a PM! Any help would be great.

I nominate Laverna for Secretary!

Why, you ask? Well, because 1. I like her people skills, 2. She looks like she has that cute girly bubble handwriting that is easy to read, and 3. Because she is always at our meetings and I just plain like her smile.

<grin>

Here are the nominations so far. Nominated by Denise and seconded by Matt.

President - Laurie
Membership - Rose
Treasurer - Denise

No other positions were discussed at that time. I have been designated to design the website, but I would not consider that a position in the club. Just a donation of my time.

Currently Denise is the President and Treasurer and Sue is the Secretary.

How long would these people be required to hold the position?

I agree that the following is acceptable:
President Laurie
membership Rose
Treasurer Denise

sounds good to me!!

LOL! You guys are awesome. I would be honored! What fun, to get to plan saltwater related activities!

If the club wouldn't mind, I would like to nominate Megan as VP. It would be great to have someone to help out with all the stuff we like to do- divide and conquer!

I think it would be smart to limit the terms to a year? Say, Dec to Nov?

:D

Currently Sue is secretary and I am President/Treasurer and Public Afairs officer... with the help of members distributing flyers and entertaining the guest speakers ;)

Senior members/Officers are myself, Jason, Sue, Wynne, Dawn, Laurie, Rose and Dave Haskell, Mike E and Matt.

I had asked to remain secretary but I am open to someone else doing it... I just wanted to stay in the SWAM loop....maybe as honorary member?

Denise

Did you mean secertary or Treasurer? I had thought you wanted to be treasurer. You will always be in the swam loop. I would be willing to be Treasurer but I can't nominate myself.. hehe lol.

Rose

Yup, i meant treasurer... I nominate Rose for treasurer, myself as honorary member ;)

How bout Matt for VP? Are ya willing Matt? I know a while back you were interested and was going to chat to Mike E, but I know he is wickedly busy with being a student....

Laurie Prez

Matt VP

Rose Treasurer/Membership co-ordinator

Laverna as Secretary

Maybe we should have a Public Affairs person?

Oh yeah, myself as honorary member ;)

Denise

I think that Public Affairs could be handled by the President and Vice President in a small club. Any thoughts?

Dave

Hmmm... OK. This weekend I will make a charter as well as signs, and get them posted on here. Usually the charter has a job description for each officer post. It should be posted on the SWAM website as well for general perusal- and I hope to get that up and running very soon. I got to see it tonight and Dave has done a truly kick butt job on it, for free, for us! We just have to find a good host quick like.

I generally think of Pres and VP like Dave, but if after we all look at the post descriptions, we decide we need a PAO I'd be open to adding whatever positions we felt we needed. Shoot, I'd be crazy to turn down help, ime.

LOL, Didn't mean to put Megan on the hot spot! I thought Megan was a member already- I think I misunderstood her intent to 'do it soon' as 'done it already'. I would continue to support her in whatever decision she makes... If she decides not to run/make it official, I would also vote for Dave.

I was also sitting here wondering- why not make Denise a Honorary Life Member for founding the club? IMO, she deserves that for getting us all started and much more... :D

It looks like a good list of people. It is great to see so much interest.

"a job description for each officer post" is a good idea. On some of the clubs I belong to they created a Past-chair or past-president member. This way someone from last years board is on the new board.
This gave continuity to the board. The role was to explain the history and help transition to a new board. Same voting rights etc as any other member. I would recommend Denise for this.
Honorary Life Member is a great idea also.
One other note always make a board an odd number. It helps with voting.

Actually, I think having a seperate person for the public affairs is best... it can be a lot of work for one person... of course it will depend on the job description... my understanding is in an organization, the Prez call meets and votes only to break ties, helps ensure all the other duties are getting done by the other officers...The public affairs person has an entirely different roll IMO, but that can all be worked out...

Maybe Dave would be a good nomination for the public affair director... after all he is in charge of the website which can be a major part of SWAM's public affairs.... advertising, listing meets or upcoming events, past events, news yada yada yada..???

I also think one should also be able to nominate oneself for a postion.... that way we can know who is interested in what... Anybody object?
