Laurie, no offense to Megan(she is great!) but I would really like to see Matt as VP.
I have no problem at all with that- I think they are both great candidates and both would do well. It'll be fun to see who wins! As a matter of fact, weren't you nominated for that as well, Dave? All accepted nominations and self nominations will be on the ballot for folks to choose from. To do otherwise and appoint folks would rob the BOO of its authority to make decisions for people when it is REALLY important for things that need private BOO votes to avoid club or member embarrassment, ie banning a member, revoking a membership due to nonpayment, or other better handled quietly and privately sort of things.
I think that that sort of illustrates the issue I have been kind of holding out for as well- I think people in the membership have definately well thought out opinions on who they think the club should be run by, and what the club should be doing. Doubling the membership, and electing the BOO are really important issues and need to be voted on by as many active members as we can contact. I'll post a thread to that effect today.
As a matter of fact, doubling the membership depends on people knowing the benefits of membership, hearing about the club in the first place, and feeling like they have something to gain/be heard by becoming a member. This is why I want active members to vote, or at least have the opportunity to do so if interested. Even if we do double the membership, that leaves us will with less than 40 members. Again, by email voting with 40 members is not hard at all if you publicize when to vote with an appropriate voting time window. We had 100-200 members depending on the year in the Veteran's Club and that worked efficently when public affairs was handled in a timely manner.
With a membership of less than 20 that can actually vote on club issues, and a current nominated BOO of 6- that to me is not a mass of people to coordinate. To meet in one place, yes. By email, no- not unless they do not wish to vote, which should be a personal choice, not a right reserved for BOO only.
Otherwise, the only benefits of membership are the company of club members, a membership card, 20% off at certain stores currently in the South (One of which no longer participates), and free admission to guest speakers 1-2 a year.
IMO, we need to offer more than that to folks... taking the ability off the table for nonBOO members to vote on club issues cripples the cost/benefit ratio for the fee.
Besides, I think a little election excitement is always fun! Kind of like the carny game at the fair with the watergun and the bullseye...
JMHO
