New owner to some Zoo's

Hello fellow RC members, I just bought some zoo's for the first time, from another RC member they will be here tuesday after being shipped out monday over night... Is their anything that I should do special for getting these to survive in my tank ??? I just want to make sure that my first Zoo purchase is going to be good, and that I get to keep what I buy alive...

If their is any pointers out their that I should know, their gladly excepted by me... thanks for all the help. Will post pictures here when they arrive and when they are in the tank.

pmeninger,
Do you have any idea what you're talking about???? Since when did Zoanthids become SPS???

Anyway, BJones, I would first bring them up to tank temperature by floating the bag for about 15-20 minutes. Then I would perform an iodine dip (see sticky thread for more details). After that, I would drip acclimate them for about an hour. Some people do it for a shorter period of time, some do it longer. The key is to stress them as little as possible.

In reality, a lot of zoanthids are very hardy. On many occasions, I've seen them tossed right into a tank and open within a couple hours. In a very few cases, this can be the death of the zoas, so I wouldn't chance it.

Good luck and post pics when you get them!

I was going to do the tank temperature thing of course, as for the iodine dip, I do have some Kent Marine Tech-D will that work ???

It says on the bottle that:

"Tech-D is useful for polpyed stonies, leather corals, and most soft corals. It is not recommended for colonial or other anemones, gorgonians, or polpys."

I'm not sure if that applies to Zoo's or not ??? Should I go out and buy another product out their from my LFS before the zoo's get here ??? Thanks for the help Ken668

Also what about glueing them to the rock where I want them... I can take out the rocks that I want them on, how long can the zoo's be out of the water ??? safely ??? Whats the best glue to use for saltwater... This will be my first time doing this, so all help is appreciated. thanks

I'm not really too sure about the Tech-D so hopefully someone will chime in.

Ken made good comments above, but to answer your question regarding glue I like to use the Loctite "Quicktite Superglue Gel"

You can safely keep your zoas out of water for a few minutes, 5 or so. In reality you could keep them out longer, but since they are already stressed from shipping you want to minimize the stress.

If you are afraid of having them out of water to long you could keep a small container of tank water to keep them in.

Thanks for the reply on the super glue, I will definatly go out and buy some so that I can put all the zoo's I'm getting where I want them...

I know that the Zoo's I'm getting are not attached to anything so I have to indvidualy glue each polpy i'm sure, how close to each other do I glue them ???

BJones,
I too am not sure about the Tech-D. Again, hopefully someone that has used it will chime in.

It's possible that you will get individual polyps, but I would think there will be several attached to each other, in a mat form. If they are individual, then I don't think it would matter how close they are placed together. I'd personally speckle a rock with them, but it probably won't look like much until they start to grow out.

Thanks Ken668, for the input... I'm going to call some buddies of mine today about the Tech-D dip... I'll post answer from them here.

Something to think about is gluing them to a smaller rock, then setting that rock in a crevice or gluing to the structure. That allows you to move them if you wanted to. Just a suggestion.

Thanks for the suggestion gflat65, I was thinking about buying some LR rubble from the LFS to do exactly that. Thanks again

Well I was told by the shipper/seller of the zoo's that I bought will be mounted on either some small pieces of rock or frag plugs... :) :) :) thats makes me happy, he said to let them adjust to my tank first before permantly placing them somewhere... so thats what I'll do, but, I now have another question...

As for a dip, he said that I shouldn't have any problems, and proably wouldn't need to do a dip, but I'm not sure if I should or shouldn't ???

Along with that do I do a FW dip or make up a batch of some dip with a product called Tech-D by KENT... ??? I'm not able to make up the dip receipt in the sticky thread in this forum, so the FW dip or the dip with the Tech-D or my only options !!! Unless their is another option...

Thanks for all the help as I should be getting these Zoa's today sometime before noon, because they were shipped yesterday overnight by the guy I bought them from.

Alright they just arrived in the mail, yea... :) :) :) I've already unpacked them and they are sitting in the tank right now to get temp acclimated, I think I'm going to leave them in their for about half an hour then I'm going to drip acclimate them for another hour then I'm going to place them in the tank.

The directions on the Tech-D say not to use it for colonial polyps. So i would skip the Tech-D. Just do the FW dip on them and you should be fine. There are very very few critters from saltwater that can survive for 5+ min in FW. And i haven't seen any of the zoa pests that can survive it.

Like I said above, I was going to post some pictures here of the Zoa's that I got yesterday from twon8, I bought 3 different types of Zoa's from him. They were the Eagle Eye's, Dragon Eye's, & Radioactive Dragon Eye's... I did everything right I believe with the temp acclimating and the dip. I ended up using the Tech-D by kent, As another friend of mine that is also here on RC said it would be ok. The dip did get rid of one bristle worm out of one of the frags, and I think I spotted some white spots on the polpys them selves, and ended up taking those off with a pair of tweezers.

Other than that as soon as I put the Zoa's in my tank under actinic lighting, they started opening right up, with-in the hour I got these pictures of the Zoa's, & today almost all of the polpys are open, expect for one or two. Here are the picture that I took and are also on my thread too. Will wait a week or two to get some new pictures, most likely close up-s if I can.

Will get pictures of all the polpys open at the end of the week proably If I can, up close one's will have to wait as I need a better camera than the one that I have.
