think my new sps is dying. i bought 3 new pieces this one seems to be dying





the first picture was when i put it in, if you look in back, one arm is purle, this morning the base was brown.

i have a montipora that is doing fine. what did i do wrong and can it be saved.

also when i accumulate the new coral, i put them all in a bucket and add water. they all came from same tank, should i be doing them separate.

also when i add ro water a sa top off, should i be adding buffer to that water, because ro water ph is 7

checked water all reading are in acceptable range, ph,ca , no, ca, kh

thanks, but was looking for help, think its going to die . the 2 pictures are of the same piece, one with lights on one with lights off next morning

sps definitely are not a beginner coral. going to need more specific parameters rather than ph, cal, alk, mag are acceptable. are these parameters stable? how long has the system been running? what kind of lighting? whats your flow like? :deadhorse:

It does not look like it is happy at all. It can come back from this if your tank is very healthy. If not i give it a few days. It kimda looks like it is stn.

my tank is 29 gallon 3 months old reef tank ph 8.2, calcium 400, kh 7-8, mag 1400, nitrates 0.0, phosphates .02. lighting maxspect razor 120 watts led. i have a montipora what has been in the tank for a month, i know its the easiest sps but i figure i give these 4 frags a change. i put them all in a bucket to acc. is that a problem, they fell over in bucket. also i have 2 power-heads 850 and 465 and aqua-clear 70 as a filter. there is flow, do these pieces need direct flow, because i don't have them directly hitting the pieces. also i cant seem to get calcium past 400-420 range, even when i dose it doesnt go up that much, should i be trying to dose 2 days in a row to get it there. i use liquid ca with mag all in one, kents

As long as it is not loosing tissue it still has a chance. It could have browned from any number of reasons, from water chemistry difference, lighting difference, flow difference or just the stress from getting transferred.

Do you know the lighting and flow conditions it came from? It may be beneficial to turn down the intensity of your lights and bring it up slowly over a few weeks. Keep in mind it may take some time for it to recover (weeks to months). As long as the tissue does not recede and the polyps come out stay the course.

Since you are new two things for you to memorize.

Stability promotes success

Only bad things happen fast in a reef tank.

wazzel the lfs had the same lighting as me. we where both using maxspect razor, he kept his lights at 80 day 100 blue, i keep mine 55 white 90 blue. Do you think with the same lighting system, that it still could be a lighting issue.

also it hasnt fully opened but it looks like when the lighting is on the brown recedes a little, and in the morning its bigger, it that possible or am i just seeing things

If you are using the same light with lower settings it should be ok. It never hurts to acclimate to the lights anyway.

What do you mean recedes?

seems like there is less brown on the piece when the light is on, then in the morning. or did i just imagine that

just a few question on accumulating to light.

doesnt moving a piece annoy it
also how do i know how long to keep the piece there
also what if it needs high light , wouldn't it slowly be starving in less light

Moving it in the tank is not a big deal, a week or so before bringing it close to the light, corals can handle sudden drops in light intensity much better than sudden increases. Corals are animals and phtosynthis is just part of how they get energy.

You do not have to move it to acclimate, you can decrease intensity or duration and bring back up. With LED's reducing intensity is what I do and what I would suggest you do.

Do you feed your corals? How do you check your salinity refractometer? This hobby take time to see changes so give it some.

I am not familure with your fixture. I do a 30% reduction and 2 month acclimation with my lights. Going slowly will not hurt, going fast might.

i do use a refractometor. i make my wife check, is it just me or are the numbers really small. i feed my coral once every 5 days. use 3 different foods, i snow the tank and spot feed at the same time, turn off filter for 30 mins. the test kits i use is api. i have a red sea, and it seems my cal level is always higher with the red sea, my kh is the same on both test though tank is kept at 78 . also sometimes my crabs or snails knock over a new piece, have to move it a few times
