New prop system

I didn't find anyone using 1 osmolator (Tunze) to work with 2 independent tanks, any thoughts on this would be great. I guess evaporation will be similar in both tanks as water surface, lighting and pumps (same heat produced) would be the same.

I would not use a single osmolator to supply top-off water for two seperate systems. I would think that Murphy's law would strike and you may end up with a modern diluvial! :eek2:

It will likely be worth it for peace of mind to invest in a second osmolator. I have seperate top-off's for three different systems, have avoided any severe mishaps and have kept the wife happy by not having large amounts of saltwater on the floors. ;)

WOW this is incredible! I'm pretty new to all of this and am teaching marine bio this next year to 140 students. The shop teacher and his room (and his COOL tools) are next to mine and he LOVES aquariums and he has offered his services to build w/e I want. Your setup is incredible...hope ours comes out 1/2 that nice!

Our main goal will be lots of growth for the purpose of teaching regeneration etc to the kids. I hope my hubby one day lets me kick his truck out of the garage to have a sweet setup like yours at home :D ! good job!

This is one of the nicest prop-tanks I've ever seen, nicer than some people's livingroom-tank.

What's your caclium-level at the moment? I bet the corals use up a lot!

Sammy33, you're right but before buying another osmolator I must try something using just the one I've got. First try I'm going to use a power inverter (12V > 220V) so I could use a peristaltic pump (got this one already) to put water in both sumps at the same time.

ladyfsyu, I was just peeking at your site and what a tremendous work you're doing with kids and reefs. Hope you get your home prop tank soon.

Thanks Shiva and W E L C O M E to RC (don't know where to get that animation with the fish swiming and the big blue letters...). I really don't know about Ca and KH levels because my tests are old and not to be trusted, as soon as I get new ones I post here the results. But I guess the levels are the same (or a bit lower because calcification of the few stony corals in the tank) as NSW I'm using, the Ca reactor is just waiting the refilling of the CO2 bottle to get started.

Thank you again for your kind words CamBarr

Thanks for the welcome, I've been hanging around here for some time, I just never took the time for writing a post here on RC :D...

You don't experience side-affects from the NSW?

Keep up the good work!

Hi use NSW for more than 15 years. I live 15min. from the sea and use the same place to collect water as the local Public Aquarium - www.aquariovgama.pt/ that does regular chemical analysis. What kind of side-effects do you mean?

Why is your tank "dry"?

Regards

Hi,

On the Dutch forum (www.zeewaterforum.org), there have been some discussions about the use of NSW. It seems that in our region (north sea) the water can contain some stuff that can cause algae to bloom in the aquarium. Also the salinity of that water tends to be quite low, so additional ''salting'' is required.

There are people that use NSW though!!

Off course I don't know anything about the seawater in
Portugal :D ...

My tank isn't dry anymore :p, that was when I logged in the first time on RC. Right now I have a ''sumparium'' or ''Seriatoporarium'', hahahahahahaha!!!

Just wanted to say that I thought the tank looks awesome and It seems to be a very nice system. your pics made me think how cool it would be to have a fuge above the tank~ maybe someday when I have $ i'll be able to build a system as cool as yours!

Hey RR,

Love what you have done.
I think it is great that you use NSW. Can I ask how do you get it from the sea to the tubs you have? Is it pumped or dragged up in small buckets to the bigger buckets?

Also in this journey you have embarked on - has it managed to make it financialy viable as a business - I guess I'm trying to say has it paid for the cost yet?

Best of luck.

At the beginning stage of your built you made your own 42g sump, what thickness glass did you use?

Dude, I rarely make it through a 6 page thread in one sitting.

Your prop tanks rock.

I wish you were my neighbor. I'd bug the hell out of you.

This is similar to what I have been brainstorming for a couple years now, but havent been able to setup due to moving so much. I want to setup something like this, except on a larger scale, maybe 8-10 of that style system :D

Very, Very impressive. You've got my attention on this thread~!

Hi, I love your tank size. It looks like a tide pool, very nice :). I'm looking to build myself a tank about the same dim 96"x18"x11". It's not for a prop tank but a display tank. I like shallow. My LFS built many 96x24x13 using 3/8" (10mm) glass and everything seems to be ok. Do you think 10mm would be enough for my tank size? Thanks

Is that what you were looking for HA

Thanks for all the kind words.

Slavesque, I would go 12mm, more safe this way. Best of luck with your project!

The hottest temperatures have passed and I'm very satisfied with the water temperatures during July and August. Soon I'm going to finish lighting for the 2nd prop tank, this tank is already running with live rock for a few months.
