New RBTA

Last night I acquired a RBTA from a local reefer. Placed it in the tank and it has only moved about an inch from where I placed it, hopefully it will stay there and not go wondering around the tank.

However, I have a small concern. What is this around the nem's mouth? Is that normal?

Yep, perfectly normal. It's just a color variation that is present in certain RBTAs. My female clones have it, my male clones don't (I'm not saying it's a sex-related trait - I only have two genetic types in my tank, one male and one female, so I can only say different individuals may or may not have it).

anenome how do u know what's M or F?

My female clones have spawned for me (eggs), the male has spawned for someone else (sperm only). :)

Congrats! A little advice if you don't mind too much :)
Feed that anemone as much as you can so it will grow fast. It's a little small for your fish and that can be a little tough on the BTA.

If A. Ocellaris didn't host without some kind of prodding, they wouldn't exist. It's their survival mechanism, it's just considerably less necessary for them to host in captivity because they aren't threatened by anything, not to mention most of the time we throw them in their with anemones they don't naturally host in the wild.

Also, I'm a firm believer that anyone who tells you they did something to make their clown host is wrong. I find it very hard to believe that hanging a picture of a clown in an anemone will somehow activate the fishes instinct  More likely what happens is that the fish just coincidentally hosts while the picture is up, so people are convinced it works.

I didn't do anything to get her to host, she just did it.

looking good travis! It looks like we both got lucky and our ocs hosted the BTAs right quick.

where your amph. ocellaris wild caught or aquacultured?

Yeah, feed the anem at least three times a week, probably more for the first few weeks. Another two inches or so an the BTA will give a proper home for that fish. The BTA will start to grow quickly...I've had one go from 3-" to 7+" in the matter of three or four months before. Do not overfeed either...this can be detrimental.

Congrats on your good fortune...

I know it is a protective mechanism for clowns to host. I was just curious if he did anything to coax it into the anemone. I know occ. dont host as quick as wild caught percs do so i figured he might of helped it warm up to it.

Pic when the clone was just placed into the tank...

I'll get an after shot sometime here, but the anem is now at least three times the length of the clown about to host in it.

That was before I started feeding a lot...wasn't at its healthiest point right there, but it came back with avengance. Oh, by the way, it did all of its growing up under 192W pc's in a 30G tank.

It is most likely just luck... perhaps my occs where hosting in a green s. gigantea in the wild and the GBTA (which has short, bulb tips) reminded them of it... who knows! :-)

My clown is wild caught and she has been eating like a big and has never had any disease or sickness. It's been about 5 months now of smooth sailing with her.
