New reef tank from Vietnam

LA? man, cali is the place for reefing IMO, so many shops and suppliers :p but na it's not bad over here, actually warming up.

Think we're getting OT on Quan's thread so i'll bring it back. Quan can we get more details on your tank? So simple but yet diverse! Astonishing on what you have achieved from barely anything!

In fact, I used to keep both fish and coral tank in 1998 when I was in high school. However, at that time, I was very curious about saltwater tanks and tried to keep a small tank. of course, I had been losing a lot money during 1996 to 2000. And I stoped my hobby in 2001 to concentrate on study in university. I only go back to this hobby in 2007. Thank to available information on the Internet, I learnt a lot of valuable things from successful reefkeepers.

I decided to buy 2 metal halide 6500K (1 is 150W, another is 70W) for my reef tank. I also used Deep sand bed and Refugium.
For additives, I use Cacl2 and baking sodium from chemical stores.

One of the successes is the use of vodka method. I think you guys here all know that. Last year, a friend from Germany guided me how to dose vodka. I spent 3 month patiently to experience this method. And now I am totally successfull with No3 is 0. That is one of my success and I want to share with you guys.

What I am cocerning now are the unstability of KH and the magenisum. I don't know should I raise magenisum level in my tank by using additives in chemical stores or not??. And any of you use balling method for additive supplement???
 
Congratulation Quan, I think your tank is the first Vietnamese's tank one in this forum. And you are sucessful to keep the reef with very basic and low end equipments.

I hope one I day I will get my nitrate down as yours. I am still fighting with it. Today I am dosing 25ml for 120g tank (including sum, and frag tank).

to vnreef: in fact, keeping a reef tank with basic equipiments is my goal because I know how much expensive the reef tank can cost me in long-term.

to rort: thank you for your reply. I think I still have some problems about Magnesium because I see the rapid fluctuation of KH affected by Magnesium (someone told me). Do you have any idea for that?
 
wow, first time i've seen a tank from Vn. I'd never seen anyone keeping a reef tank when i was there. I still remember how amazed i was when i saw the lion fish for the firt time at Dam Sen Park. Anyway a very nice tank you got there Quan, Congrats!!!
You should make a trip to Hong Kong and grab some equipments from there. The tour ticket was about $300 when i was there back in 2001

The whole structure of my tank is designed to serve my two goals: reduce cost as much as possible and keep the water as clean as possible. So, that is why I focus much on how to keep water cleanly in a cheap way.

to dattong: I think it has changed very much from the last time you were there. Although the number of fishkeepers and reefkeepers increases slowly, some people still want to own a beautiful tank in there living rooms. However, most of them will be disappointed after a few months because saltwater fish stores in Vietnam don't have knowledge in this field at all. As I know, they only buy corals and fish and resell to customers without guiding them how to keep corals and fish living in a long time. As a result, many customers lose money and quit this hobby after a few months. For those who are still in this hobby also feel discouraged because they continue to spend money hopelessly to have a beautiful tank like what the sellers said to them in the first time.

Is it possible to list the brands or post pictures? At one time i had set up a tank for my aunt in Saigon (fresh water though) and i never saw halides or skimmers for sale (that was back in '06 though. . . ). also is the street that has all these fish shops still open (don't remember alot as it has been awhile).

Quan, don't worry about it, you speak much better English than Waterkeeper :D
Your tank looks beautiful and I would not hesitate to use the water from your coast, just add some artificial salt to bring up the salinity as I have to do with New York water.

I have been to Saigon many years ago but I was mostly north west of there in Tai Ninh.
There is some beautiful country there but unfortunately I never saw the ocean there.

I rememeber there were only about 5-6 saltwater fish shops in Saigon at that time. Most of them only have some experiences and basic knowledge about saltwaterfish. Therefore, although I learnt a lot from them, I could not keep fishes alive.

To Paul B: I think water from coasts is now very polluted, specially in Vung Tau. I see some people take the water which have low salinity and look very yellow.
 
I have gone swimming in the South China Sea and it is better water than you find in Long Island Sound and warmer too. :D

Were you losing fish to disease or were they just dying without apparent distress or disease. Sudden deaths usually echo cyanide collection and were a major cause of fish losses in the states for many years. Thankfully that practice is no longer routine.

Yellow water is not usually a good sign
 
I think that is caused by silt in that area Paul and not organic content but I could be wrong.
 
Don't know, some of us never had the pleasure of swimming in the South China Sea and had other things to do :lol:

But I did watch the TV show "China Beach" :D
 
your tank look way better than my tank here in the US lol.. i'll be in vietnam this summer on june, i hope i can come to take a look at your tank.
