new refractometer

What are you fragging for me? :D I still need to make it down there sometime to do the meshmod. Do you need me to bring the whole skimmer or just the pump?

diversity is the beauty of reefin. Everyone reef's a little different.

I calibrate by taking my meter over to a buddies house and comparing it to his meter. I see this as good because if his system is doing good then mine is. Also, I get a free beer or two using this method.

You use RODI - although you know it is a couple points off and you should be adjusting for that, it is still a point of reference. Not one that I would suggest to other users to use, but it works. You have proof it works, very nice reef.

The true way, 53ms reference fluid. The guy that uses this is real boring but has a lot of expensive stuff becuase he reef's different. Instead of spending every last penny on frags, he is buying equipment, testing levels. This guy is real boring to me. This guy needs a beer and a lazy boy in his life. It would truely enhance his reefin.

I choose the beer method. It works for me.

I just got the Sybon two days ago for my b-day. Best present I asked for. The Sybon is made a lot stronger and heavier than the portable one you put a link too. And like you said it comes with a free bottle of 53ms fluid.

For anybody reading this that does not have a refractometer, GET ONE NOW. I know you have probably heard this a million times, but it is worth it. When I brought my Sybon home, I immediately tested the water with it and compared it to the swing arm hydrometer I had been using... bottom line:

hydrometer sg of 1.023
Sybon (refractometer) sg of 1.0275

I use RODI water because the instructions say to use distilled water. RODI theoretically should be as pure as distilled. Just because some brands say to use calibration fluid meant for an electric meter does not mean all of them need to use it.

I have compared my refractometer to a friend with a different model using his tank as the testing water. Both came out identical and he did use calibrating fluid.

Just the pump but I will be unable to do anything for probably at least a month. By 8am tomorrow morning I will be laying face down on an operating table with my back sliced open.

Good luck Todd. I wont be able to make it down there until well after the new years anyways. On the Octo skimmers, I think the collection pump design sucks. My foam gets to the top, then comes down and then gets "stuck or blocked" by the rest of the foam. I am trying to "wetten" up the skimate, but I haven't been able to. When the tube gets blocked, then the skimate just builds up on the tube instead of going over and into the cup.
