hmmmm sea plankton are pretty much mysis only whith way more nutrents. krill and silversides are alot harder for them to digest so im gunna stick with the plankton. id love to here other advise.

thanks SVXH6!

mysis are a good idea, as well, but you are right on with the plankton. And like you said krill and silversides shouldnt be used to feed aneomes. They cannot digest them fast enough and end up spitting most back out. I would recommend feeding that anem a bit more than normal becasue it seems to look stretched at its base in the first pic.

Baloney!

My bubble tip has been getting a diet of silversides, clam and krill for the past four months and has went from a small bleached out specimen to 9 inches with full vibrant color. The key is to make the pieces small around a quarter inch and not feed too often.

When I said what I did I was pretty much quoting what Calfo explained during his workshop at Macna 06. Since hearing that I will never feed my anemone silversides again.

As far as how much to feed. I guess it would depend on your tank size etc, but I would feed a good bit 2 times a week for a few weeks. You will see the anemone start to stretch less and less.

So which reef guru is throwing out this info? (you answered, we posted at the same time)
There are a lot of long time anemone keepers who have been feeding their anemones thumbnail sized pieces of shrimp and silversides. Many of these people have the longest lived anemones in captivity.
I'm not saying that mysis and other large zooplankton are not useful, but it is very difficult to determine whether or not the anemone is actually eating that sort of food and how much of the food it is actually getting. Do newly aclimated anemones sometimes spit out their food? Sure. Do they spit out undigested mysis? You bet, you just don't see it if you are not watching carefully. Do large, healthy BTAs digest 3" silversides in less than a day without even spitting back the skull? All the time.
Your statement as written is well.....just false.

just when you think you have it all figured out ......

is this statement in writing anywhere? my GBTA has tripled in size and split twice on a diet of krill and silversides. i have never even seen any of them spit a single morcel back up??

Nice and healthy looking RBTA, Gratz

Ever since i got mine, I have been feeding it mysis shrimp and Brine shrimp plus. I feed mine every day and I know im spoiling it :).

i know silversides and krill arnt bad but are plankton? do you think itd be ok for me to feed it plankton?

sorry to break in but it seems as though you all have the experience to help me. I, too, have a new RBTA. I imagined I would simply stick a piece of food in its mouth to feed it. Not working out so well though. It is difficult to see the mouth to see if it is even open. The bulbs are full and very dense. Also, when I put food (tried mysis and krill) close to its mouth, the pair of small percs get to it beofre the anemone does. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks, Matt

feed the clowns then place food on the anemones tentacles, allowing the anemone to bring the food to its mouth itself.. never place food in the anemones mouth..

i work in a restaurant and i use fresh shrimp anems seem to love it.i'm talkin tiger prawns.seems to work for me in a world that is so tough.for my hobby i wish i lived in the states it'sn tough to get the good stuff!i want onyx clowns in canada

i just fed my anemone. i pretty much just gentaly placed the thawed out cube near the center of the anemone. it closed around the cube and when it opened back up it was gone. does that sound right?

im gunna be gone till sunday night but ill be on here for a couple more hours today. so all the comment, questions and tips are wanted asap! =]

Sounds like you have a healthy, aggressively feeding anemone. I am guessing that the cubes are the standard size, about the size of the end of your finger.
There is nothing bad about feeding plankton, mysis, etc. it is just not always easy to tell how much food the anemone is getting. For example, a cube of Formula 1 or a piece of shrimp or fish, is pretty much 100% food. A cube of mysis, depending on the brand, may be 25-50% water.
Your anemone looks great. Refer back to your pictures in a couple of weeks. If the anemone's tentacles don't look as nice or the entire anemone looks like it is smaller, increase the amount of food you are giving it, or change foods.
It takes a long time for an anemone to starve. Sometimes people don't even notice its happening unless they have pictures to refer back to.

thanks! im going to take pictures before every feeding. the original ones will work for the first pictures.

my plankton are by hakari same brand as the mysis and brine i get. i can get some formula 1 if that would be a good option too. switch off like every other feeding with the plankton?

im leving for portland for the weekend and will take pictures on sunday before ifeed it again and post them.

thanks
