New Ruby Red Dragonet

Okay so I finally decided to purchase one of these. My tank is about 16 months old and I have around 16 fish 4 of them being wrasses. I keep my fish VERY well fed so I'm not concerned about them competing for food. My tank specs are below I believe. Does anyone think I should be concerned about him (yes he is a male Ruby red) running out of food?

Thanks!

Nick

Dragonets are my favorite fish by far. I always train them to eat frozen in an isolation tank before releasing them into the DT. If you have a high pod count with quick reproduction they will be fine. No idea if you have a sump but with that size tank I would assume so. These really help the pods hide from your dragon giving them time to rebreed.

They may be small but they will hunt a tank clean if left unfed.

What kind of wrasses? Pretty sure my six line (got rid of him) killed my ruby, and was trying his best to kill my mandarin when I gave him the boot.

Sorry I haven't been on in forever... Lol
My DT is 90 my fuge probably holds 30 gallons and I have s 7 gallon frag tank that I use for frags. I looked in there the other day and noticed there are a gazillion little creatures swimming around. I also have notice that my Ruby red dragonet is getting kinda plump. He picks constantly and is very very active nonstop from lights on to lights off.

If the tummy is bloated by the time your light goes off and continue in such way for a week or two than he is getting enough food. Just be thoughtful of adding another fish that competes with him in the future. Mine sleeps with full tummy everday

It could be OK as long as it has pods, but that could change at anytime dependant on your husbandry and tank conditions. More than likely it will die in <6 months. Pod population is not consistant, it changes as your tank/food changes and matures

My 75g DT with 20g sump/ fuge was also at about 14 months when I added my mandarin. 8 months later she is doing well and reasonably plump. I hedged my bet a few ways.

- I had her eating frozen in a QT. she was not enthusiastic anout it and was not putting on any weight, which is why she got a shorter QT than most of my fish (I think she was only in there about 3weeks - I don't have my record book with me). Once in the DT with pods, she has not shown any interest in frozen. She probably accidentally eats an occasional cyclops or mysis, but not much.
- i started and maintain a small pod culture (2 pretzel jars with airstones) and harvest from these to the tank to keep the population up. This has really shown me how much the population fluctuates.
- I also made a Paul B style feeder to occassionally give her some newly hatched brine and give the pod population a break for a few hours. Hatching brine every day is too much of a nuisance, but it is a nice way to give her some extra food. She learned that I usually feed the rest of the tank before I fill her feeder, so sometimes when I feeed the other guys, she will go check to see if there is anything in her feeder. I like to give her brine for a week or 2 before I go on vacation as an insurance policy.

Suggest having one or more of these backups just in case.

Btw, I have no where near the number of fish you do. I have 6 in my system and wouldn't add more than one more.
