So for the tank I got I bought new sand and washed and mixed with the old sand now I have diatoms is this normal?

It's not newly set up though... Only thing that's new in the tank is the sand... All the lr and livestock are established lol

Just connected a sump with live rock from an established tank and. My tank has been running for 3 years prior to this. Still had a diatom growth for couple weeks. It dies off eventually.

Dude, completely off topic but I got to ask.

Why does your avatar look so familiar? What is it?

I just let mine cycle through without dealing with additional cuc. Three weeks after the sump connect there is hardly any diatoms. I did syphon the sand couple times a week.

The best course of action is nothing. The diatoms are feeding on the newly introduced silicates. The sooner the silicates disappear, the sooner the diatoms will die off naturally.

Awesome I went ahead and traded some frogspawn at the lfs for some cuc stuff... This tank didn't have a single cuc member when I got it

The new sand may have contributed some silicate. They should wane over time . If not some gfo will remove silicate.
