New Seahorse Tank...

Buddy if you think you can keep two adult seahorses in a 5g tank longterm your fooling yourself.

It could be done with a 30g sump, or with daily 100% water changes, but the biolad for two seahorses cannot be supported by a 5 gallon tank. There is not enough room for the rock and filters in a tank that size to handle the load of the horses.

Not to mention the stress you are putting on the animals by not giving adaquete swimming room. Some things are a question of can but should, that does not come in to play here, you can't.

You will have water quaility issues, followed by disease, followed by death. The first symptom of disease may be death, but you might get a symptom first.

I would be shocked if they lasted a week, I'd place large sums of money that they will be dead in a month.

Any takers?

If I lock you in a closet with food and water for a year can you live? What if I only remove your wastes once a week? Think you would be happy?
If you don't want to provide a proper home for seahorses, please do them a favor and get a goldfish instead.

i would be changing water daily... and i think ill pass on the goldfish... actually just forget i ever even mentioned the seahorses and u wont hafta bother yourselves anymore

Today I finally bought my seahorse tank...I bought a 37 gallon because the stand I had fit either a 29 or 37 gallon and I chose the height for the horses.....while at the LFS buying the sand, I mentioned what I was setting up (mind you I have been researching this for over 2 years) and the comment was "boy that is a big tank for seahorses".....I am guessing that this comment was made because they have 6 horses in a 12 gallon nano. I just said that it is recommended to have at least a 20 gallon......knew she probably wouldn't make the connection to their tank! I feel sorry for the horses though, people see this and think it is the thing to be done and the horses are the ones who suffer!
