New set up

First let me introduce myself.
I have kept fish for about 25 years, mostly FW. The last time I tried SW was about 1995, we had no internet at the time so could only go by what the LFS would tell me. They never said anything about LR or the importance of a protein skimmer, so as you could imagine my SW experience did not go well.

The last few years I have been without a tank, until I found an old 20g tall on the side of road that needed a new glass. Repaired the tank then went to Petco to look around. While at Petco I found they had a sale on some tanks for $1 a gallon. The 55 gal was the largest for that price and could not pass it up.

I have always wanted a reef tank as I fell that is the ultimate type of tank one could keep. Before I began to set up anything, I did tons of research (Internet is very useful in research) I researched several types of filtration as I wanted to reproduce nature as much a possible in my filtration. I decided to use the 20g for a sump/ refugium as there is just not much else that can be done with one that small. I decided after several price checking to go DIY.

I did all my plumbing with PVC pipe. I did a duel overflow system in each of the rear corners for better skimming, all DIY. http://s977.photobucket.com/user/oceanlassiter/media/102_5036.jpg.html?sort=3&o=2 First I set it up with just the base rock (45 lbs) and sand (60 lbs), which I ran for a few weeks test everything to make sure that it can not flood and getting temperature and salt to a consistent level. Temp is holding at 78.5 -79.5 and salt is at 1.025. After several weeks of running I put in 20 lbs of LR to start the cycle. this is what I have so far http://s977.photobucket.com/user/oceanlassiter/media/102_5037.jpg.html?sort=3&o=1 My ammonia is just starting to climb, so far it has gotten to .050 ppm as of this morning.

Any advice would be helpful as this is my first attempt at reef keeping. I selected the Current Orbit LED 48" -60" for my lighting. This has taken two months to get it this far with close to $1000 invested. I plan on adding more LR as time goes on ( few pounds at a time) until I have about 100 lbs in it.

Here is a pict of my electrical http://s977.photobucket.com/user/oceanlassiter/media/102_5033.jpg.html?sort=3&o=5 I set it up with switches, the top switch shuts of all outlets next to it, it contains my return pump, heater and protein skimmer so all i have to do is shut of the switch to do water changes. The lower switch is for anything else needed. wave makers are on that switch.

In my opinion I would add the live rock at one time, die off occurres when it is added in the tank, kinda throws your water peramiters off, I did it all at one time so the tank has one cycle, not a bunch of mini cycles, also I would stack the rock with many open spaces so as not to have many dead spots in the rock work, tight packed rock work does not allow water flow. Hope this helps

I would be very selective on the rock. Look for very porous and light pieces this way you you can optimize the filtration capability with less rock. I say this due to the narrow footprint of a 55. I learned this a a while back when I had a 55 set up. This will help eliminate any dead flow areas in tank and hopefully prevent issues down the road. Good luck and just my 2 cents.

The LFS wants $13 per lb so I been ordering rock online. Do you recommend any certain type of LR or any certain retailer? I have about 65 total lbs of rock atm (45 lbs of base or dry rock & 20 lbs of Fiji LR) I am thinking about 25 - 30 more lbs of LR for a total of about 90 - 100 lbs.

Have u checked out craigs list for people selling their systems, I have scored big on it for lr and corals, most people just want to get rid of the stuff, I got lr for 4-5 $ a pound on there

I have seen people selling there systems, but never thought to ask about pieces of it. I will give it a try.

I ordered some pukani dry rock from BRS. I believe it was 10lb's to fill in some spots. It certainly did that and the rest ended up in the sump.

You should add liverock all at once so there is only one cycle. What your going to have to do if you don't want another cycle is adding cured dry rock.

Tank seems to be cycled, although the ammonia never went much above 1.0 while it was cycling.
Present readings;
Ammonia 0 ppm
Nitrite 0 ppm
Nitrate 4 ppm
PH 8.0

I figured to keep an eye on things for another week, then if everything is still ok I will begin to put my CUC in. Has anyone ever got there CUC online (all at once) or is it best to go to the LFS and just get a few at a time? Also; should I feed the CUC as I would fish and if so what kind of food should I use?

I also rearranged my rock to allow for better circulation. http://s977.photobucket.com/user/oceanlassiter/media/102_5045-1.jpg.html

1.0ppm is a bit low. Try feeding it as if you'd be feeding a tank of inhabitants and see if the bacteria can take such a bioload.

I thought it was a bit low myself, but once it came back down the nitrites went up to a little over 1.0 and now both are at 0. I will try the ghost feeding and see what happens. better safe than sorry.
