new skimmer

I'm looking to purchase an Aqua C EV-120 or EV-180. I have about 90g max. of water with an average fish load. My tank is mainly SPS corals which is the main purpose for my tank.

I have limited space in my sump where I want to place the skimmer. So if the 120 is sufficeient it would the prefered.

But bottom line I need to know what is best suited for my tank

Hi o2bnh20,

Thanks for your inquiry. Either skimmer will work; however, I would recommend the EV-180 over the EV-120. The EV-180 has a significantly larger reaction chamber and foam riser, so you will get more contact time, better skimming and more organic removal. If you can somehow accommodate the EV-180 in your sump, it is the skimmer I would recommend: especially for an SPS tank where low nutrient is key.

Please let us know if there is anything else we can help you with.

Sincerely,

From reading the owners manual it sounds like the in sump application is the preferred method. Trouble is there's not enough room for a 180 in my sump. Would I regret putting it oustide the tank? Overflows and the like?

Hi Scott,

Using the skimmer either inside or outside of the sump would be fine. You'll notice some salt encrusting around the twist-off collection cup, but that will not affect how the skimmer performs. For an external application, I would recommend going with the larger Mag Drive 9.5 pump to compensate for the additional tubing. It would be a good idea to put a gate/ball-valve on the pump so you can control the flow rate.
