New SPS Dominant Tank Plan

Yeah, I know, lol, I HATE PLUMBING!! On my 135 I think I must've spent $200ish over the two times I did the plumbing. I'm going to try to make this as simple as possible...a few unions, few 90s, a ball valve or two, and lots of straight pipe. I'd guess the head will be around 6-10', not sure though. What is a really good, energy efficient pump that's under $300-$350?

There won't be a CL on this tank, just the return/SeaSwirl and the Tunze 6100. I changed my mind.

I may try convincing my Mom to allow me to do it at her house, shouldn't take too much...we teenagers can be fairly manipulative. It would be a lot simpler there.

I saw that stuff at HD in West Hartford too, isn't the grain size really large/crystalline?

I would not say really large, but bigger than southdown. I have always liked the larger stuff better as it stays put in high flow tanks. If your set bed is set up right and you have all the right critters, the sand itself won't make much difference. If you had a limitless budget it would be one thing, but I bet you could set up a QT with the money you'll save on LFS sand!

I would also reccommend to use new sand, both sand bed tanks I've broke down, the sand smelled like sulfur and was pretty bad overall once it all got mixed together.

I've used "used" sand twice before with no ill effects. I'm going to take the uppermost layer of my current sand into the new tank, plus some HD stuff; if it smells like H2S then I won't use it, but I'm pretty sure it'll be fine.

If you need more flow through the overflow, you can cut out every other or every third tooth to accomodate the large flow volume.

hey tsquad whats up im 16, i had earned from about 3 or 4 years some money from my lunch money christmas birthday and more now is my time to do my dream tank i live in dominican republic down to the carribean and all of you guys are very lucky to have all kind of places to buy stuff tanks coral everything, im waiting for a 315g custom glass tank from a placein miami and it will fly to my home far away. I think your ideas are great but believe me with 1500 is nothing so keep earning money you could work at Burger King or something good luck in your project

Hey Tony, wow, 315g!! That's huge...I hope you get a thread going with lots of pics lol

Remember, I do have $1500, but I only have to buy the tank/stand, some pipe, a SeaSwirl and a Sequence Dart or Barraduda. That should run me $1000 at the most, buying everything new. I will more than likely get everything used.
