new stream is not clean

I just received a new stream 6200. The impeller and surroundings are coated with a sweetish, slightly oily substance. What is this? How should I clean it?

Thanks,

jayo

It is glycerin and it is from the factory testing, it serves as a lubricant and prevents the parts from sticking on start up. Forget about it and just put it in and plug it in, their is less than 1ml in a 5ml solution added to the pump and glycerin is harmless anyway.

Good to know. Might not hurt to put a note in the box or the instructions about it.

Thanks!

I agree, it is a frequent question. I think since the brand is so established in Germany and most of Europe they don't even think about it.

yep, sure did. got some on my finger, and it was slightly viscous but not really oily, and I took a little taste to see if that enlightened me, but it didn't. :) I rationalized it afterward by saying "this is supposed to go directly into an aquarium, how toxic could it be?" but definitely didn't do a lot of thinking before tasting. :)

I've tasted saltwater (does my water taste like the ocean? Yup, pretty much) and kalkwasser (in a siphon accident - blech) too but I draw the line at skimmate. :)
