New sump setup have a few questions

Ok, so getting a 40 breeder and using my current tank (20 long) as the sump. Will be drilling the 40. I picked up an internal overflow off ebay rated at 600 gph. Dimensions are LENGTH 7-1/4"WIDE 2-1/4" HEIGHT 5" . The biggest question is, how high do I drill the hole? I've got 5 inches to work with provided I like that overflow when I get it. Should the hole be toward the bottom of the overflow, middle, top, etc? The 2nd question is, how far should the teeth be sticking out of the water? Tank is going in bedroom so I'm trying to keep it as quiet as possible. I'm just thinking if the overflow is placed too high the water will have further to fall making noise. Last question is, do I have to put some kind of standpipe in the overflow or just having the bulkhead open will be fine.

Thanks for the bump. Been trying to do as much searching as I can on here but some stuff is hard to find. I've decided against a single drain and will be going with a herbie setup instead. Think that will help with the quieting of everything. I received my overflow in mail today and of course several teeth are broken off so I think i'm just going to build my own instead and be done with it. I guess my only last concern is my bulk head size choice. I got 1 1/2" ones. The site I was looking at showed 1" ones were mainly for like 20 gallon and below so I got the 1 1/2. Now looking it seems 1" is good up to a 1000gph or more, so I believe I oversized. Granted, I haven't drilled anything yet so I can still change but both are already in the mail. If I keep it as is, will I run into problems with noise if I keep the bigger pipe? With the herbie, i'm assuming I can just adjust the gate valve to get it right even with the bigger pipe and all would be ok. This is my first ever sump though so I'm sure I have a lot to learn.

considering that you purchased the item from a seller, have you tried asking them directly to see if they have recommendations for the items they sell as far as plumbing and overall setting up?

Put the hole low in the overflow for the reasons you stated - falling water noise. DO put in a standpipe. DO go full siphon if you are able it will be very quiet. The water level will be around 1/2 way up the teeth, so place the overflow accordingly. Is the overflow big enough for 3 holes? At least 2?

Ok, so got the plumbing going , or at least started. Decided to go with 1/2in (internal) bulk heads, got both of those drilled and luckily didn't destroy the tank (first time ever drilling a tank), started getting my piping measured, cut and glued. Will try and get some pics up this weekend so it won't be a worthless thread.

Finally getting some pics put up. Hauled every thing outside today to do a leak test and it was good to go. Herbie setup is definitely silent, pump was the only noise once I got it dialed in.
