bought this last week as i was after a kole tang and the lfs assured me it was a juvenile kole but i am unsure i know it's a type of Ctenochaetus but not sure which type.

head has some orangey spots, eye has a yellow iris around the black pupil. when the eyes move it looks as if there is yellow around the eyes but it is very faint.
body has stripes but looks more of a two tone bown rather than blue and brown stripes.
dorsal fin and anal fin both have blue along the leading edges.

pics aren't the best but it helps

Nope- juvenile koles are usually yellow. There are many bristletooths, of only which a few are usually seen in the aquarium. Baensch Atlas has a good section on bristetooths, I will check when I get home.

That's a striped bristletooth tang. I had one sold to me as a Blue Eye Kole, of which there is no such thing. The great thing about this tang is that it eats detritus! You got a good fish there.:D

I agree with jnarowe--Ctenochaetus striatus juvenile. Detritus makes an important (and usually large) portion of most Ctenochaetus sp. diets.

I have the same kind of fish and had a hard time trying to id it.I thought that it was called a two spot brisstle tooth but if you guys are sure its a stripped brisstle tooth well then I guess thats what it is

The "blue eye kole" is one of the common names for the binotatus bristletooth, the other common name is two spot bristletooth. I agree with the others, thats no juvenile as almost all juvie bristletooths are yellow in color, I also agree that the fish you have is a striatus. Heres a pic of my blue eye, you can see where he gets his name.

thanks for the replies.looks like a c.striatus.

kahuna tuna - are you saying that my tang at 3" in lenght is not a juvenile fish???

He may not be a full adult, probably more of a sub adult, but I believe the juvie bristletooth tangs are mostly yellow in color and darken up as they get older. My tang is about the same size as yours and is definately a sub adult, showing some of the yellow coloration but not much.
