New tank, new concerns ... fish have stopped feeding

Ok, I’m going try to spell this out in a descriptive (and yet entertaining way) so that I can get as many knowledgeable responses as possible …

This past Thursday I finally upgraded my 75-gallon tank to a 125-gallon tank. It looks awesome. It’s aquascaped nicely with two islands of live rock … nearly 200 pounds total. It has plenty of hiding places and still has lots of room for swimming. Its occupants are a Double â€"œSaddle butterfly, an Asfur Angel and an Evansi Anthias (all f which were in my 75 gallon tank) and a nice sized (8”) Blueface angel and a Flame Hawk (both of which came along with the new 125 gallon tank).

All of the water parameters are nearly perfect. Even nitrate is zero. I have a trickle filter (no bio-balls), a canister (for clearing particulates from the water column), a macro algae fuge, and a denitrator (the kind you feed with a syringe of vodka once a week).

The anthias, hawk, and butterfly have adjusted without a hitch. The behavior of the angels concerns me, however.

Both the Asfur and the Blueface have taken up residence in one end of the tank (on opposite sides of one of the LR islands). Neither of them strays far from their cave, and neither has exhibited any interest in food. In fact, for as much as they move around the aquarium, they both could have fit quit comfortable in 10-gallon tank!!

The Blueface comes out of his cave and swims just to the side of the opening and hovers there for a minute or so, then swims around the back side of it and goes back in his “home”. Fifteen seconds later, the pattern repeats. He has been repeating this pattern of behavior for two straight days (without change). He literally lives in the last one foot of the tank. The Asfur does the exact same thing, except a few times a day he’ll swim to the other side of the aquarium and then back to his cave.

Like I said, neither shows any interest in food or in eating. Prior to the new setup, they were both VERY good eaters.

Neither seems distressed in any way, they exhibit no flashing or even rapid gilling. In fact, they’re so calm that one would think they are partially sedated. Their movements are very slow and deliberate, but also seemingly well rehearsed (so to speak) and purposeful.

Is this type of behavior normal after a move .. even 4 days later? Should I be concerned? Will it pass? Any “tricks” to get them “motivated?

Could it be that the dose of vodka I put in the dinitrator has leached back into the tank water and has the angels half-drunk? I did not have the denitrator with the 75-gallon tank. It came along with the 125 I bought from a retiring hobbyist.

Input? Anyone?

um i dunno bout the vodka someone else can answer that but to get em feeding, try feeding live brine shrimp just after lights out in the tank, leave the room lights on and let the live shrimp get blown all around the tank so hopefully the angel get some in his cave and then goes seaching for more, beyond that try feeding a mussel or scallop from the local fish monger, just drop it near where the angels do their little routine from the cave and hopefully they get the taste for food.

sorry cant help more, strange they have stopped feeding but it does sound like they are as of yet very comfortable in their new home.

Thanks, lux. The Blueface does seem to strike at the live brine. Now, to try and get the Asfur feeding again.

Ok, how about mysis shrimp soaked in garlic. Also, both of these fish should be interested in nori. You might try that.

Just like people do in stressful situations, I wonder if they became constipated after a "traumatic" move to a new tank. The Blueface took a huge dump yesterday noon and now has renewed his interest in food.

The Asfur comes out at feeding time, but just looks at it all and doesn't take anything. I have tried mysis .. and Nori (the Blueface eats both).

Right after feeding time this noon, the Asfur unloaded a huge "dump". Maybe this evening he'll feel like eating again.
