Where did you purchase your light fixture?

A local fish store ordered it for us. We're in Ontario, Canada.

isnt that tank too nice for a red sea skimmer?

You were right GSM, the new tank is way to nice for a RedSea Skimmer...

Bubble King 180 in da house!

Photos to follow shortly.

OK, updated tank photos coming this weekend. I promise!

The Hydor aspiration pump in the RedSea C-Skim 1200 died yet again, this is already the second replacement and I've had enough. The old adage applies, you get what you pay for.

I decided to cancel the Vertex RX4 CA reactor order for now and continue 2-part dosing with the very reliable LiterMeterIII and take the allocated funds for the CA reactor and just go for it.

I picked up a Bubble King Mini 180 and I am very impressed, this skimmer is solid. It's like comparing an S-Class Mercedes to a Kia Rio. I'm hoping this one will last me 10 years or more...

Here are some un-boxing photos:

Can you access the pump on the Bubble King for cleaning?
That's a sweet skimmer:thumbsup: Congrats!
To answer the question above, yes, it looks like the bubble diffuser is attached to the pump only and comes out with the pump and all through the top. Nicely made.

Yes, the BK can be completely disassembled for maintenance in only a few minutes...

Thanks for the kind words everyone! The Bubble King is finally broken in and is pulling some really dark and smelly nog. This skimmer is amazing and is worth the high price tag. We also received the second Vortech MP40W and the flow is now perfect!

We added a small clam and some SPS frags that are doing very well.

More photos this weekend!

Cheers!

love the tank and aquascaping dogfather. the filtration system is sweet also. looks like your dream tank is well on its way! keep the pics coming....thanks.

After reading about mpedersen's success at feeding frozen, spawning and raising Orange Spotted Filefish (Oxymonacanthus longirostris), I was enamored with this stunning species.

Although she does "pick" at our acropora, she is not sucking out the polyps as has been written in books. Several people have been keeping them in their SPS tanks without fatalities. She is far more interested in enriched, frozen brine shrimp than acropora, she's also a great hair algae eater!

I trainer her using a turkey baster and now when I put it in the water, she pecks at the clear glass tube trying to reach the food within.

i would love to add an orange spotted filefish to my reef, but thought they were a definite no no for sps. would love to learn more about them in sps dominated tanks.

tabatha...you say yours picks at the acro's, does it do it enough to diminish PE on them?

how about yours dogfather? looks like you have a lot of lps, it probably doesnt bother them?

It's one and the same tank :p

I'll let Tabatha comment on the livestock, I'm the hardware guy...

I don't think I'm allowed to link to my references but I think I can tell you that the information I collected is from MOFIB (Marine Ornamental Fish & Invertebrate Breeders).

It has been observed by keepers, myself included, with FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE, that Orange Spotted Filefish do pick at Acropora but it's not certain WHAT they are eating however, there is no damage to the polyps.

I can confirm that they eat hair algae as well as zooplankton and meaty foods, they can be trained to eat frozen by starting with live adult brine shrimp and slowly adding frozen brine and eventually, other foods.

doh.... so i'm slow. dogfather and tabatha come together!...lol. well... BOTH of you have a great tank going!

thanks for the info tabatha. i've tried many dwf angels and all but the genicanthus picked at my sps, but i'm sure they were actually trying to eat the polyps, it looked more like they were picking at something on the coral. not that it mattered, it bothered the corals enough to not get PE during the day.

i don't think i can resist not trying the filefish. i can try it out in the sump with some sps first. they are just too cool to watch and i love their unusual coloration. thanks again dogfather AND tabatha.
