New Tank Pics (please be kind, i'm a noob)

Hi All,

I recently started up my 75 Gallon tank. Sorry about the pics, not that great of a camera and even less great photographer here. I'm not sure what to do about the power heads in there. I have these cone things on it that normally go into an undergravel filter, I'm worried it'll suck something up in there eventually. I don't have much rock and since my kids wanted to add a bikini bottom scene to it, I figure that I'll let them have half the tank until I fill it up with LR.

good start! as far as the powerheads I wouldnt worry, all of your livestock if healthy should be able to avoid the suction....just a suggestion but I would probably not grow those yellow pollyps, they pack a nasty sting and if you plan on going full on reef they will become a nuisance! hope this helps!
 
really? we were actually really excited to see them growing... what type of sting do they have? what type of problems? oh well, best way to get rid of them? do i just pull them off and flush?

also wondering about all the green grassy growth i have. they look a little like the purple grassy growth on some of the rock. the green stuff seems to be spreading quite a bit on one rock.
and about this spongy stuff growing... it seems to dry up then it comes back...
 
Looks like you got a lot of hair algae on that rock with the kenya tree. You might want to pull off the kenya tree and treat that rock before the problem gets worse. It'll spread everywhere else, then you'll have to treat all the rocks.
 
sounds like hair algea - A Few Turbo snails/hermits should help keep some of those algeas under control - once you are ready for fish, herbivourous fish will keep it nibbled down to a minimum as well.

A really good example of a way to use rock in a harmonious way not covering the whole tank---I'm for getting in lots of inverts to handle the hair algae (which, unchecked, will just recur any time the tank has a change) and recycle the biomass. It looks great. The advice about not letting a specimen get hit by algae is absolutely correct, but a cleaning crew should be able to handle it, and a new toothbrush can do wonders about picking up stuff that floats.
 
was wondering where i should go to get some snails and hermits and what kind? are they all herbivorous? also thinking about adding a couple fish... maybe clowns or goby or??? any suggestions? how bout shrimp? how much can i add, i'm worried i'll go overboard...

also, i've been getting bubbles from the protein skimmer i have... is this ok? how is it suppose to look when it's operating right?
 
Go slow on stocking. Cleaners first. Create a stable environment before adding much in the way of coral and fish. Patience pays off.

The skimmer is supposed to make lots of bubbles. The bubbles pop in the collection cup and leave an ugly dark liquid (smelly too). This liquid is then discarded when you clean the skimmer.
 
I like your tank palileo. And your rock looks good. You can tell the hair algae came with the rock so dont stress to hard your other rock looks great. My suggestion would simply make that rock its own island and just restack some of the others to take its place if youd like to keep your current rockscape. That way your other rock will be less likely to have the hair spread onto it while your trying to correct the situation, kinda like rock in temporary exhile. Those corals you have can tolerate being at a lower light level especially if you compensate them with a spot that has more flow:)
