I purchased a 75 gallon reef ready oceanic tank w/ hood and stand from someone on rc. It is a beautiful tank, I am absolutely in love with it. Well, I decided to take things easy, and buy the rest in pieces, so I wouldn't kill myself financially. When I bought the tank, the guy had all his bulbs and pieces in the bottom of the tank, so I didn't get a chance to look at the bottom. I asked him it held water, and he said yes. I was starting to set things up yesterday, and noticed a chip in the bottom of the tank that had been sealed with silicone. It is less that 1/2 of a dime size. What should I do? I filled it 1/2 with water, and it didn't leak, but with rocks and sand-that is much heavier. Should I give it a try and set it up.

I've used the silicone sealer on my tank when it leaked, and have not had any problems with it not holding. BUT....my leak was towards the top, where the rim was, so obviously, I had nothing sitting on the "patched" section.
I know that doesn't help much, but I just wanted to give my experience with using the silicone.

There's most likely no problem at all. But to be certain....empty the tank of water....Then using a 3 0r 4-inch piece of square glass that you can have cut for you at any glass place, put it over the chip after having placed aquarium silicon over the amount of area needed to make a seal between the piece of glass and the bottom of the tank with the chip in the center. Allow the silicon to cure completely...about 48-hours or according to the silicon's instructions, before filling up with water again. It's probably going to an extreme but this should give you peace of mind.
