No water changes until your cycle is complete. Ammonia is the first to show then nitrite and finally nitrate. When there is no detectable amount of ammonia and nitrite and a moderate nitrate reading the cycle is complete. I would probably do a 25% water change on a ten gallon and maybe let it run another week or 10 days before adding fish. I just got back into it as well about a month ago. Rescued a 29 gallon biocube that was in terrible condition and now have several other tanks in various stages. This hobby is so addicting. Jut keep testing. If no ammonia shows up add a small piece of raw shrimp or some kind of food. If you have live sand you may or may not even see an ammonia spike. I've never used any additives of any kind. I prefer to let things go as if they would naturally. What do you have for filtration? I'm running an AquaClear 50 HOB on my 20L and it has a bag with some bio media. Ran the same thing on my last 20L many years ago with absolutely no problem. If you're looking at HOB filters definitely go with one of these. They're made by Fluval now but still marketed as AC.
