Set up tank 4 days prior started ghost feeding. Cant get a reading for salinity, thought it was the hyrometer but LFS used it in my presence successfully but my tank reads zero?
LFS said it can take a while for new tanks is this bull or is there not enough salt to read perhaps?

Regards

I would NEVER EVER ask that LFS another question!

If your hydrometer worked testing water from his tank, it should work on yours. What salt are you using and what rate of salt to water did you mix? The slats I'm familiar with all recommend about 1/2 cup of salt for every gallon of water.

I agree with Ron. Most all require a half a cup per gallon of water to reach 1.023 in most cases. It's a good starting point for our requirements of sg.

The salt says 1 pound to 4 gallons of water for a salinity of 1.023. That equated to 1 cup per 4 gallons in a 13 gallon tank. Its crystal sea marine salt. As i am english i struggle with converting to metric lol.

You sure it's not supposed to be one pint per 4 gallons?

I think you need to check your scale and your math.

1/2 cup per gallon. That will get you spot on where you need to be. As others have said.

And that guy from your LFS is a moron. Hopefully just an employee and not the owner. Either way I'd have a chat about that ridiculous "advice".

And get a refracometer, they are more accurate, just needs to recalibrate every so often.

"IF" you simply dumped a pile of salt into an unfilled tank and then added water it "could" take a while for the salt to properly mix..

If you dumped salt into a tank full of water it "could" take a little while for water movement in the tank to mix the salt..

Lets not bash the LFS without all the details of the conversation..
