New tank

Hey, I put some sand in my 28 jbj hqi about 2 days ago, when do you guys think it will clear up. Also after that can I add live rock? thanks!

I'd say you can put the live rock in right now. Just because the water's a little cloudy shouldn't be any obstacle. Anyway, it should clear up soon....Three or four days is all that it should take.

I'd say that you shouldn't keep one. I've been told that they aren't easy at all. I've never had luck with them myself, as well. I guess you can try, but don't be too optimistic.

I know they do alot of sand sifting, they have alot at one of my lfs. I really like pearlheaded jawfish also, and I'm pretty sure a small tank is ok for them, but I really like the diamond goby.

I agree with Avi. You can certainly add the liverock now. There's really no need to wait. Actually, if you do wait, you may re-cycle if the rock isn't fully cured or cured at all. Adding it now would probably be best.

As for the goby, I have never had one. But....and I don't know how true this is, but I have been told that for most "sand sifting" fish, you need a mature tank of at least 1 year otherwise, they will pick your sandbed clean. Again, I don't know this to be fact, as I have no experience. I'm just passing along what I have read on other posts.

Oh, I already have 40 pounds of live sand in the tank, I don't know if thats enough for them.

I'm not sure of that one way or the other. I'm thinking it's not the amount in pounds that you have, but rather the depth you have and what "stuff" has built up in the sand to sustain their eating habits.

Hopefully, someone with experience in this part can chime in and give a more definitive answer.

Yeah, it's probably around 3-4" deep.

I think that if you want to have any long range success with one, don't plan on having it depend on your substrate for its sustenance. Only buy one that is eating well in the store before you chose to buy it. Even better...have them show you that it will take more than one kind of food....e.g. mysis shrimp and flake food....and then be sure to put that in for it once you get it to your reef.
