I have had freshwater tanks for years. I purchased a 58 gallon oceanic tank stand combo and had an itch for salt.My tank has been going great for about 4 months. Ive ran into a small prob. Ive got red slime what should i do. Thank you for any help

Make sure you are using DI or RO/DI water. Also you may want to make a big water change. If that doesn't work, you may want to use some chemi-clean.

I use ro/di water and have done water changes. I used a turkey baster and got it off my lr. Its mostly on my sand now.

Make sure you have pretty good flow or circulation and don't overfeed. That's the two usual culprits. If its a new tank you might go through a rash of it before things settle down anyway...best of luck!

I had a outbreak about two years ago and soonerbolt nailed the culprit. I put some more flow in my tank and switched to feeding once a day and have not had any problems for about two years, but to get rid of the outbreak that I had (because it was really bad) I used chemi-clean wth no ill effects.

Water flow can really help. As a rule of thumb, try and get above ten tank volumes per hour turnover, at least. So, on a 58gal, the total turnover of all pumps together should be in excess of 580gals. I run over 20 volumes per hour turnover.

A single maxijet will provide that turnover, but will produce deadspots and that where the slime takes over. Add a few smaller powered units to make lots of choatic waterflow. It really makes a difference.

The other thing that can make a difference is the lights used over the tank. I dont know what bulbs you have, but sometimes older bulbs can lead to bad algae growth. I know your tank is new, but I just thought I would mention that.

Hope things work out for you,

paul.

This may be a dumb question, but does MaxiJet 600 mean that it runs 600 gph? I never really thought about it until now, thought I'd ask.

watch your feeding and make sure your lights aren't on too long and it should cycle out. I'd probably get as much as possible with a turkey baster to help things along.
