just set up a new 29g tank about 1 1/2 months ago. going to start to buy some live stock, gorgonians, crabs, maybe a sponge. then hopefully soon some horses!

I'd skip the crabs and get some more hitching posts. Most have problems with sponges long term as well.

Best of luck.

i can get captive raised kellogi for pretty cheap. around 30 dollars each. maybe see how much a reidi will cost me through my lfs

Your tank is going to be way to small for a longterm home for kelloggi. They can grow to be around a foot in length. May of the captive rasied kelloggi are also raised in large nets in the ocean and then shipped to the states. They have a long track record of coming in with internal parasties and many have not been able to keep them long.

IME it is better to pay a little more upfront and buy a seahorse from a private breeder or an aquaculture facility.

HTH

that is good to know. my lfs only has kelloggis and they are bred here in the states. i was going to do a little more research about them before i was going to purchase a pair. thank you though. i just know that the reidi are pretty pricey on line, but it is totally worth it in the long run since i really do not want to have to up grade my tank too soon.

one more question. would it be better to have a cl, a canister filter that would be hooked up to a sponge filter, or just have my little a miracle trickle filter with a large skimmer. obviously i am going to be modifying the overflow to keep the little guys out. with the canister, cl i could use the space underneath to raise copepods in a ten gallon. maybe a refugium with trickle, and a skimmer is better than all.

I prefer to go with a refugium and a skimmer myself if it is in a sump. If you go with a recirculating skimmer you can increase your skimmate while protecting the pods, to an extent. I like recirculating skimmers a lot myself, but if the tank is in the bedroom, maybe a more quite optiont hen a needlewheel should be chosen. The tank in my bedroom is silent, the reef in the living room has an audible level of noise which is a trade off with a better skimmer.

Does cl mean closed loop? Can you do a sump with a skimmer and a closed loop? This is exactly how my tanks are setup. I like a lot of flow to keep the detritus from settling so the skimmer can get it, or maybe more appropriately it can get to the skimmer.

I have my closed loop come back through a spraybar. So between the sump return, the closed loop, and the two powerheads my seahorse tank turnsover at 60x per hour. Not for the faint of heart and not a starting point, but they can for sure handle more then the 5x recommended tank turn over. I haven't been that low on flow since 05'.

I hate cannister filters. You have to clean them weekly for them to work. If your running a large UV then I see the point, otherwise they are worthless IMO. There are easier ways to run filter media IMO

If you don't mind who is breeding kelloggi in the states? If they are truly aquacultured I know someone who wants quite a few. I told them they were not available. I could not find them. To be honest I don't know of anyone who has kept a kelloggi for over a year. Many have ordered them, none have lived. Some of the ones that are sold as kelloggi are actually Kuda's and don't grow as large. I am really interested in where they are from.

Thanks

Start looking better and better
I will suggest paint or tin the back of the tank ^^
The tank will look even nicer without seeing the wires

Might wanna switch to a koralia nano instead of the one you are currently using. Some have reported problems with those models.

How is the macro filling in?

Kevin,

A good skimmer, means little if any organics, so what is there to clog your filter, and IF it needs cleaning, excellent, more rubbish out of the system, hmmmm.

I am just to lazy to clean the canister once a week. It takes an hour. So be ditching the cannister the skimmer picks up the same organics and all I have to do is empty a cup. If I run a UV I'll run and clean the cannister, but it's not something I enjoy, and this is my hobby.

Then again, on my syngnathid tank, I don't have a cannister or skimmer. I set it up that way just to bug David. ;)

You spoke of a local Kelloggi breeder? I have been looking for a male for a few months, my 2 females are lonely.
Thanks,
Rick
