New Tech student here, saying hello...

Hey guys, I'll be heading to Virginia Tech next year and just wanted to introduce myself as I will be in the Blacksburg area, obviously, quite a bit. I'm disappointed that I probably won't be keeping a tank next year in the dorms, but if I live off campus my sophomore year I probably will.

Here are some of my tanks in the past. Both have been torn down in order to provide some money for student loans.

Thanks guys, hopefully see you around,

Ben Klauder

glad to see you coming into the group, Ben. Although I will be leaving before you get here, I'm sure all of the guys will make you feel at home.

Hey ben why don't you bring your smaller tank with you to the dorms. It would be a nice desk top aquarium. Your brain in that tank is pretty sweet looking. Welcome to the club. Ben

Thanks guys. I wish I could keep a tank in my dorm, but for breaks I will have to break it down every time I come home. I'll have to see how it is when I get there.

Yeah I knew a guy that kept a really nice 20 long in his dorm without any problems. If you keep a nano couldnt you drop it off at someones house around town to watch over the break?

I am also leaving before you get here but VT is great and there are a lot of good people in the reef club to help out.

Cheers,
Ian

Thanks guys. I was thinking bottled water would be fine for top off in a dorm room? Seems to make sense for me.

I just upgraded my 5.5 canopy to a 70 watt MH, hopefully I will be able to put it to use next year.

Cya guys,

Ben

you can get the 2.5g RO/DI jugs of drinking water at kroger for about $3, i went that route before i had the opportunity to install an RO/DI.

still would wait a couple weeks to get used to dorm life before you set up the tank. that would be heart breaking to bring it up on move in day and then have it crash b/c of heat or something you werent prepared for. (cover to prevent stupid roomate from pouring beer in tank  )

there are very nice and understanding people in our club, i'm sure you could trust someone to hold onto your tank during fall/spring breaks. when you come back to pick it up you'll prob find all these new frags in the tank also :)

Us "permanent residents" are always around to help you out with things like that ...

BTW I agree with Alex - I used super market drinking water for long time when I had a smaller tank (and not very bright lights to boil away the water). You must be careful, however, to make sure that you get distilled or ro/di water, and not the "natural spring water" :).
