New to clams, please help

I just got a clam yesterday and everything looked good until this morning. It was on its side with a hermit crab on the foot opening. Upon inspection, the foot appears shredded and it is not open. Not all of the foot is gone, but it is retracted into the shell.

Can this damage be re-grown? I have turned it upright on the sand. If it can be saved, how can I keep it from being picked on by the hermits (SOB's)?

Thanks, Chris

what kind of clam is it?can u post a pic? make a little dent in the sand and place the clam down into the dent, and put a small flat rock about a half inch under the sand at the bottom of the dent.

Unfortunately, I do not know what kind it is, and I can not provide a picture. Yesterday, it was blue/green. I can see through the slight opening the color is still there.

I have cut and placed a piece of plastic bottle around the clam to prevent the hermit crabs for getting on it.

Do clams have the ability to re-grow tissue?

they can regrow some, depending on what and haw badly damaged it was.do u have slot's in the bottle for the clam to get water flow?
