New to hobby, shrimp needed for goby?

Hi, new person to the hobby and was wondering about keeping a shrimp with a neon blue goby. Is it necessary to have a shrimp paired with the goby I'm thinking of getting? Also, I was wondering about anyone's experience with feeding gobies. Since they're bottom dwellers, how do you guys feed your gobies to make sure that they're getting adequate amounts of food? Thanks!

Not necessary to have a pair. As for feeding use a turkey baster to suck up food from a cup/glass and blow toward the bottom of the tank. No need to blast all the way to the bottom, they will come up quite a bit to feed.

Neon blue gobies don't pair with shrimp. They're also not bottom dwellers and don't burrow. Some in fact are great cleaners and will set up shop where they'll eat parasites off other fish.

Oh, good to know. Will have to make sure to pick up a turkey baster before I get him. Actually decided to go with a different goby, instead of the blue neon. .probably will go with a shrimp goby instead.

I have an antenna goby pistol shrimp pair and the goby comes out and eats with the rest of the fish. He stays low, but still gets his share of food. He usually is near the tank overflow, so the water naturally flows in that direction.

I have a high fin shrimp Goby with pistol shrimp. The Goby gets food fine when it floats by, but some time I squirt a little food right in the burrow to make sure the shrimp gets some too. I don't like to over feed my Aquarium so I'm not too sure how much my shrimp will get if I don't do this. I could just be a little too worried about it as well, but I love the little fella, lol.

They are so much fun to watch! It's become a game to see where the Goby will emerge at feeding time.

I've not target fed them, I do feed the tank pretty well.

It is not needed to add a pistol shrimp to a goby but it can be enriching and beneficial to both members of the duo, and is very fun to see them interacting. However, pistol shrimp can kill other fish in the tank, so be wise about your decision.

It's interesting reading what everyone has. . Yes, I have read that pistol shrimp can kill other fish. Just wondering if it's wise to have an ocellaris clown in with a pistol shrimp. . ? I definitely still want an ocellaris, but won't get the shrimp if it'd be risking it with having the clown in there. Actually, for those of you that have a pistol shrimp, how loud would you say they are? I've been reading threads where someone was startled and woken up by their pistol shrimp. (tank was in the same room where they slept, as mine would be)

I was reading about this the other day. It sounds like many of them are not that loud. This was where I found some interesting information, it may be worth checking out. It walks through the different types of gobies, and the shrimps they pair with.

Thanks for the link, very informative. May decide to get a shrimp, not sure yet. Just was wondering for all of you that have gobies, do you have to have both sand and gravel ? If I was just thinking of having a goby, could I get away with just having sand as a substrate?
