new to lps

hey guys. I recently started keeping corals about 3 months ago. the system is a year and half old. I've had zoas for about 6 months or so and the first real corals were a birds nest, green stylophora pystillata (?sp?) , and an encrusting gorgonian. all three have done exceptionally well especially the gorgonian and birdsnest, both have doubled in size. I'm going for a mixed reef and wanna venture into lps. my girlfriend really likes torch corals and I wanna also try goniopora. my lfs has a pink goniopora with about thirty heads for $40. would these be a good choice to start with in terms of hardiness and care level? any other recommendations are welcomed I really need something with some bright colors that will stand out on my black sandbed. thanks in advance

If you are keeping healthy SPS, LPS shouldn't be an issue. I have a red gonipora that is doing well never had an issue, most LPS are very hardy you will be ok.

If you are doing well with NPS and SPS, LPS should be a breeze. goniopora is a little tricky, when you get a piece that is captive breed, they tend to do well and survive in a tank. But when you got a piece that was wild collect, the money you paid is for RENTING this coral. They will last a month or two but eventually die. Frogspawn, hammer, and torch are the long tentacles kind of LPS which will dance in the current. Lobo and Acans are also easy but they are more a piece of beautiful colorful meat!

Torches are one of my favorites but they do pack a punch and can have a long reach. Just give it some room and you will be fine. They provide great movement and come in a lot of different color variations. Never tried a goni but have read the same about trying to obtain a captive grown speciman. There are also many species of gonis and some are easier than others. Unfortuantely IDing individual species is fairly difficult.

some lps corals need to be fed right? I currently don't have to feed any of my sps or soft corals so I don't keep phyto or anything like that on hand would I need to buy food and if so what would you guys recommend

That'd a simple zoe you will get more color variety within a single lps....

Thanks, The red coral and the Green one are both Open Brain corals. The green one looks awsome under the actinics.

I also recently discovered meteor showers which I like a lot.

i like the meteor shower thd best I think but that bubble coral is pretty bad a** also. keep the suggestions coming!!!!!!!!

my original post said my girlfriend really likes torch corals and later in that post it says "I" would like something with some color. Even though you quoted my original post completely wrong! there is actually a lot of truth to what you typed. Unfortunately I'm color blind!! lol so it actually does come down to my whether my gf likes the color often. I am not totally color blind meaning everything isn't grey but almost all colors have a greyish hue tothem and I cannot tell the difference between related colors. most of the neon corals though I actually can see the color of and after viewing a world where everything kinda mixes into one greyish blob its quite a treat to see something so beautiful !! that is actually one of the biggest reasons I enjoy this hobby so much because I actually get to enjoy the colors anyway thanks again for the pics I welcome any other suggestions I am enjoying them!!
