New to RC & IA... looking to set up a new reef

I've been doing Marine for about a decade and nano-reefs for the past three, but now that I'm in IA (Cedar Rapids area) for at least 4-5 years, I would like to set up a new reef.

First thing I've noticed is that finding any systems for sale, much less systems with low wear and tear, is sparse. Aquariums/stands/etc are also rather expensive in the few shops I've been able to locate - so I'm hoping that my time here will help out with identifying resources.

Ok - so I'm in a new place that is rented. It's a 3 story townhouse with a very large, unfinished basement. The main support beam for the main floor runs along the wall that seperates the kitchen from the living room - so that makes the optimal place to put the tank.

I am still debating between a standard rectangular tank @ >55g <= 125g and a quarter cylinder corner tank @ 52 or 98g. I like the idea of the corner tank better, as it won't take up an entire wall - but the geometry of the stands would be problematic for lighting and especially the sump (if you have some custom solutions you've used for this, I'd love to hear them).

I like the idea of making my own sump, but I do not have tools and have never welded acryllic.

So, because cost is a big factor (living on a stipend and GI Bill and that's it), I understand my options are limited by default - but I am also looking for advice, possible resources, and ideas about getting the most bang for my limited buck - as long as it doesn't include PC lighting.

There is a pet store directory on the front home page, look there :) You can also see things for sale locally of this forum, new things usually every week. Cheaper that way too :) Come to a meeting, and I'm sure you'll get half a dozen offers for free frags to get ya started ;)

Welcome to the forum!!!!

Heres a thread I'm following on custom 54 g set up

I love my 54g. But I'd still say go for the bigger size if you can.

You can get pretty high power 24" lights for a 54g these days (check out the aquamedic 250WMH with T5). I'm just using low power PC but its enough for what I have, if I remake the tank for SPS my pick is the aquamedic. They also have straight T5 in 24" (cheaper). Or you could go with just a 150W or 250W pendant MH. Okay there must even be MH+VHO that are 24" too. Marine depot is an internet source for all of these.

Granted its a small market here, welcome to Iowa, at least your car insurance is low. :)

98 gallon bowfront reefready is a nice tank. Easily lit with one 250 watt double ended metal halide go 400 watt single end if you want monster sps.

If you are looking to go 4 foot long go with a 120.
