I've been doing Marine for about a decade and nano-reefs for the past three, but now that I'm in IA (Cedar Rapids area) for at least 4-5 years, I would like to set up a new reef.
First thing I've noticed is that finding any systems for sale, much less systems with low wear and tear, is sparse. Aquariums/stands/etc are also rather expensive in the few shops I've been able to locate - so I'm hoping that my time here will help out with identifying resources.
Ok - so I'm in a new place that is rented. It's a 3 story townhouse with a very large, unfinished basement. The main support beam for the main floor runs along the wall that seperates the kitchen from the living room - so that makes the optimal place to put the tank.
I am still debating between a standard rectangular tank @ >55g <= 125g and a quarter cylinder corner tank @ 52 or 98g. I like the idea of the corner tank better, as it won't take up an entire wall - but the geometry of the stands would be problematic for lighting and especially the sump (if you have some custom solutions you've used for this, I'd love to hear them).
I like the idea of making my own sump, but I do not have tools and have never welded acryllic.
So, because cost is a big factor (living on a stipend and GI Bill and that's it), I understand my options are limited by default - but I am also looking for advice, possible resources, and ideas about getting the most bang for my limited buck - as long as it doesn't include PC lighting.
