New to reef

Hello, I am new to reef/marine fish and would like advice before I start to set up.
I have successfully kept tropical fish for some years now and would finally like to make that step up to getting my own reef tank; but have been scared off every time I have tried by people say how expensive it is and all the equipment and wires I see on videos online.

I would just like a simple reef tank (about 300L), rock, sand and easy to keep corals. How much rock/sand?

I understand 300L isn't a huge amount so I have thought about the did I would like to get. 2x clown fish, 1x royal grammar, 1x flame angel. And maybe 1 other (recommendations?)

What and how many CUC would people suggest?
And can This be et up without a sump? I was thinking a simple hang on filter and hang on skimmer!

Please any ideas and advice would be great. But keep in mind I do want to keep it fairly simple.

The 300L (75g) tank you are considering is a very good size tank. Big enough to keep most reef creatures and small enough that the maintenance isn't over bearing.

I started with a 30G (120L) and then moved up the the 75G. It was a great tank. My biggest tank now is a 125g, but all together I have 4 tanks and close to 400 gallons of saltwater in the house!

Good luck, take your time and ask questions!

Hi welcome to an amazing hobby! I've had a 30 gallon for a year now and today have just started cycling my new 80 gallon. Have learned a lot along the way but clowns are great starter fish. I stupidly started with 4, didn't know any better (and my lfs didn't warn me). One jumped when I had the lid off for a couple of days then one of the others relentlessly harassed my smallest. Was so close to taking out the bully but as a last ditch attempt changed my scape and added a couple of LPS Corals. All now happy as Larry! Have also a bangaii and a yellow tang...wondering how they'll go in the bigger tank once it's cycled but it's a wait and see....I also really would love a flame angel but heard they can take a liking to your corals. My next addition I'm thinking will be a flame hawk fish but before I do the big transfer I'm going to add a CUC - something I didn't do in my first tank but now think it's essential. Am following you cos I'm keen to know how you go [emoji4]
PS I have sumps, refugeeums and protein skimmers in both tanks - seem to work well
