New to the Hobby and Hello

Hello RC peeps. I'm new to the hobby so you will have to excuse me if I don't use the proper terms. I own a 65 gallon tank with a fluval 306 canister filter. I have about 30 lbs of live rock. Crushed coral substrate, 2 clowns, 1 foxface, 1 hippo, 1 yellow, 6 hermits, 1 butterfly, and a horse shoe. All is going well I'm going into my 2 month point now and figured I'd jump into the forums. I run a current USA LED lighting that runs for about 7 hours on timer. My main question right now is would it hurt if I ran another canister filter? The 306 is rated for 70 gallons. Looking to add another? Would it help in keeping the water clean? The water as is, is pretty clean. Just looking for that crystal clear look without breaking the bank.

Don't wait too late on that. Re the filtration, is there any way you can set up a sump of about 20-30 gallons, with skimmer.

I could but it would be awhile to get up the money. Another canister wouldn't be beneficial?

Well you will have to get rid of the Hippo within 4-6 months because they grow pretty quickly and when they are in a too small of a tank, they get aggressive. Why even put the fish through the stress? Good Luck!..You ask for advice and don't take it.

I read your username a couple times before I "got it". Bravo sir.

It appears a Fluval 306 retails for about $150 on Amazon. For that price, have you considered adding a sump? For the cost, I'd imagine you either break even or come out saving money verses buying another filter. It'd certainly save you a headache of additional filtration. I suppose another option is a HOB filter.

Regarding the sump, you can pick up a used tank from yard sales, craigslist, facebook, etc. Petco and I think PetSmart have a $1/gallon sale twice a year. I got mine from someone who left it out for free by the curb. You'd need 3 glass sheets cut, which I paid about $3 per sheet at Lowes (Home Depot doesn't carry it/cut it). Add in a caulk gun ($3 and caulk $6) and you're all set minus a return pump and pvc.

DIY Sumps are ridiculously easy and cheap to make. Simply do a youtube search on them. An added bonus is it adds more water to your display tank, and you can throw all your other junk in it out of sight like heaters, thermometers, etc.

^+1 Don't waste anymore money on buying another canister. Get crafty and build your own sump for dirt cheap. Its a great way to gain experience in aquarium husbandry, and an even better way of fine tuning your system to what you want. Canister filters become a burden very quickly. Sump setup will make maintenance easier and add more water volume, which is always beneficial.

As for the tang police.. They are correct, the size is pretty small for either of those species. The fox face is kinda of pushing it as well, but he should do fine. If at all possible, I would see if I could trade those guys for something a bit more suited for your set up.

Horse shoe crabs are also fairly difficult to maintain is a system that's not specifically meant for their husbandry. They can become quite large, and typically die from starvation, or poor molting. Its sad because they really are awesome critters!

Just wanted to give as much info for your journey ahead.

Welcome RC
