I'm new and currently have a cyano and hair algae (kelly tells me) problem. Saltykelly is my Jedi master I am but a padowan. Nice to meet you all. I will try to be on RC off and on.
P.S. Pastor's tank could use your prayers.

Welcome Matt!

Can you provide some parameters?

Specifically Phosphates & Nitrates?

With a ten gallon nano adding powerheads to increase flow can be tricky (but doable), but cyano algae is often a sign of low flow.

How long has the aquarium been set up?

He doesn't have a test kit, but the main problem is he needs to stop using TAP WATER!!

Problem solved.:)

Welcome... Matt
Hope to see you here, even if you get the troubles worked out.
Oh, and we like to see pictures, post lots and often:)

Agree the tap water is the big issue. Especially for the hair algae. Hair algae is ually a water quality issue!.

Good luck Pastor

Welcome to the freak show PastorMatt. NUHS class of '87 here.

Get *pure* water. Not mineral, nor tap, nor spring, nor anything but pure. You don't want to chance chlorine, chloramine, copper, phosphates, nitrates... Etc.

Take some air-hose and siphon the existing cyano. It's really satisfying. Add some flow (like they said) and plunk in a handfull of cerith snails. If you can borrow a sea-hare your hair algae will be gone in one day in a 10g. See about replacing your stock return pump with something that puts out higher gallons per hour but consumes fewer watts/generates less heat.

Welcome PastorMatt. As a newbie myself, I can tell you that this is the forum to subscribe to. It is just like having a Library (and many Librarians) at your fingertips.
