New to the Nano reef

King,

Still waiting for the new tank. After the ov ernighter cracked, they didn't want to send anymore airfreight. So, it is coming ground and it will be here by end of day thursday. I can't freaking wait to get it up and running again. Esp. with the new pieces I got since it was down. As soon as I do, I will be sure to post pics.

Colin,

I will contact Bryan. Didn't know he dealt with others, but I will check him out.

Guys,

As far as the hard coral is concerned, do you do anything for the calcium (additives, etc.)? Also, I am assuming you guys have calcium test kits. Can you recommend one for me that is relatively easy to use?

Steve, I use salifert test kits or aquarium pharmaceuticals test kits. Prefer salifert, easy to use and said to be the most accurate.

For calcium, I dose kalk (Mrs. Wages pickling lime alot cheaper mrswages.com) with the top off water. Daily on the frag and everyother day on the nano. I then supplement Calcium/Alk with Randy Holmes-Farleys two part. Instead of dow flake I use prestone driveway heat, which is the same calcium chloride. I only do this when the calcium is really low, twice a month is a lot. When I had the larger tanks and more SPS it was more frequent.

Frequent water changes helps keep the calcium in check. I keep a clam in the 10 gallon and the kalk keeps it thriving.

http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2006-02/rhf/index.php is the link for the two part. Check out reefvideos.com and there is a video on making it with the recipe.

HTH,

Tom

Colin,

Is this where you got your toadstool? The one on the site looks like a clone of yours. I will let you know, right now I am looking for zoa frags, until I get that retro check then I will be doing an upgrade.

Tom

Tom,

Yep, got the toadstool from him, as soon as it's big enough there is a frag with your name on it. Also got those blue zoa's right next to the toadstool from him to.

Colin,

Good looking out again. Bryan knows of a guy with a red goni and he is working out a deal for me. Thanks man.

Sweet, I got my stuff from him in the tank. The chalice he sent was HUGE, no clue where it's going yet but I'll work on a home.
The orange yuma is very nice, can't wait to see it when I get home tomorrow evening after it's settled.

I'll get one up tomorrow :)

A friend of mine just dropped by with an awesome ric and some green paly's so I'll get pics of those to.

Colin, at this rate your going to need us to come over and thin that tank out......ninja style. How much water is in the tank 2 gallons? Just kidding. Looking forward to the pics!!!

Tom

I have the aquarium pharmaceuticals test kit , it works okay for me.You guys ever use "Reef Crystals" by instant ocean. I have been using it my 55g tank for several months and the calcium stays about 450. Of course there is only LR in that tank , we will see how it does in the nano reef!

Wow, that's odd! IO is such a huge company and I have always trusted their name. I have never noticed that prob but will look into it. thanks

At this point, to my knowledge anyway...and, to my experience...Tropic Marin Pro Reef is the best salt out there...very nice blend of trace elements and such...the water I get from the LFS (both stores) use Tropic Marin Pro Reef...my stuff all looks awesome and so does theres...I can't recommend it highly enough...

As for the ninja operation, I just learned some new super secret sleeper hold from a ninja training website last night...can't wait to try it out... ;) may make the "operation" a little bit easier...suddenly, it is now "Mission - POSSIBLE" :D

I like tropic marin alot, but it is not to available around here. I do use Oceanic with great sucess, there is some controversy on Oceanic, something about Alk and Mag levels. Never had a problem.

Hey guys,

The cube got here in one piece this time, but just for good measures, I duct taped the entire bottom 3 times. Already have the sand and LR in and water, along with all the necessities in the chambers.

The water parameters are exactly on, just waiting for the temp to come up. I used about half the water in the 20 gallon to fill the new cube. The rest was salt water from the LFS. The 20 gal is looking a bit cloudy now so I think I may try to switch the livestock over this evening. The params in the 20 gal are pretty good (not where I like them, but not out of hand), but the salinity was a 1.028, which is way high. Makes me a bit nervous. I added distilled water and it brought it down to 1.026, but I still want to get everything into the nano.

I will probably acclimate the fish and corals and just place in the zoas. Does anyone think acclimation is not necessary? Or because half the water is LFS water, I should acclimate?

Ok, I'll keep everyoone updated.

I'll tell ya what....its only been six days without the cube, but it felt like a freakin' eternity. Checking and double checking water params. Doing a bunch of water changes on the 20 gallon just to keep stuff clean. Etc. Etc. Etc.

And I only realized it when the UPS guy said, "you got another one? I was just here last thursday". I explained what happened, he apologized about me having all these troubles (I am sure it was cracked way before it got on his truck) and then I was like, "wow, it was just last thursday".

Odd. Very Odd.

Steve,

I would DEFINITELY acclimate...you would hate to go through all that work and then all of a sudden your zoas crash cause you didn't acclimate...it may be a little bit more work, but it will be worth the extra hour or two of your time...

Now, more pics!! ;)

Steve,

Can't wait to see Nanocube version 3.0 :)

O.K. Pictures I promised but there's a problem. I can't remember which Florida Rics I got from Bryan because I have gotten quite a few recently.

Orange Yuma (Crummy Pic, looks better in person)

I am posting this for 2 reason:

The Yellow Ric is from sealifeflorida and looks awesome and the green paly in the top right is from a local buddy of mine (Tom, I am going to try and get you some), also I think the blue/green ric is one from Bryan:

Chalice, way to big, no clue what to do with it but nice :)

And a FTS, I need to scrape the coraline off the front glass.

Colin that looks GREAT!!

OK so my shipment from brian is coming Saturday. This is my first order so im not sure how everything is shipped but i am curious about acclimation. For example, when i got my xenia they put it in a plastic container with lid. when i got it home i put some tank water in a bucket and put the contianer in the bucket of water. but then i wasnt sure how i would drip the xenia... so i put the water from the bucket back in the tank and then dumped the xenia in to the bucket, the water level would not cover the xenia.. is this a problem? I wasnt quite sure so i filled the bucket back with tank water enough to cover the xenia... so i think acclimation was pretty much out the window...

so my question is , how do you guys acclimate your corals . zoas an so forth?
