New to the Nano reef

KF,

I have about 20 gallons in the cube with a maxi jet 1200, which i believe is 290 gph. So, whatever that works out to.

Jason, did not want you to over dose the kalk. I did, not pretty. Lot of water to change. It is great for an auto top off! PICS, when your done :).

HR,

As you can tell, math is not my cup of tea.

GUys,

I have a yellowish-green type of "film/algae?" on the glass on my tank and a little on the sand nearest to the glass (that may be because I wiped the glass yesterday and it accumulated on the sand as it loosened). I was just wondering if anyone could give me a tip on how to keep it off.

All the parameters are fine, as is the spec. grav./salinity. There is also a touch of algae on my Acan lordhowensis. How could I clean it off of that? I was thinking a VERY soft bristled brush, but I am not sure....

Let me know what you guys think.

Steve,

From what I understand, is algae comes from nutrients. Some algae is good. For three years I have wiped algae off the glass. Depending on the type of algae on acan, maybe blowing it off with a turkey baster, or picking it off.

Jason,

I see the maltese cross on your avatar and FF/PM in your signature, are you active? I am a retired career FF/PM, miss that job everyday. The smketyr is a fu-bared abbreviaton of Smoke Eater from my days fighting fire.

Alright,

Off topic question:

I am going to the woman's sister's fiancee's house tomorrow for the super bowl and I need to know who to root for.

I basically stopped giving a **** when the Eagles lost. So I need a team to root for to make it interesting.

Yeah, but Peyton Manning has never won a Super Bowl...so I'm gonna root for him since my Redskins have sucked butt for many years now... :(

smketyr - I am active...well, as active as 6 kids and a wife allow me to be...I have been on both the career and volunteer sides of the business...I am currently on the volunteer fire side and on the career side as a Comunications Officer II for Richmond, Virginia (3rd busiest 911 center in Virginia - Alexandria and Fairfax are busier only because they are smack-dab against Washington, D.C.)...I love the 911 side, I think it is more fun because while you might be sitting in your station thinking "Man, I wish I was on that call." I'm running it on the other end...I basically get to be on ALL the calls... :D

As for overdosing Kalk...what do you think a Calcium reactor does? It constantly drips Kalk in to a person's system as top-off water...I know lots of people that use Kalk as their top-off water and their systems grow like crazy!

Jason, Yeah I ran continous kalk on my 120g with the top off, great growth. I tried it on my 30g frag system and threw all the parameters out of wack, lost some color and inverts. I switched to dripping at night a recommend from Anthony Calfo on another forum. Worked great! I drip every other night on the 10g.

I use to do both too, only we got paid per call on the part time gig. I also, used to dispatch 911 once a week for a few $. I have six kids, tho our oldest died 3 yrs ago from lupus and the twins 6yrs ago shortly after birth for no reason. I have grandkids that make up for it.

Later,
Tom

slukach, I think that yellow lime green algae is what I have been dealing with. Real visible on the sides, right? I think that is just something we have to put up with wth the PC lighting! It comes off very easily . I picked up one of those sticks with the sponges on it at my LFS for 3 bucks. It works very well and better than the mag float especially on the corners.

Now i am dealing with a diatom and cyano bloom on the sand in the front of the tank. I put a phosphate sponge in the filter this morning and tonight my phosphate seem to be zero. It was getting pretty close to zero since i started using D/I filtered water
but the sponge did a nice job finishing the job! If I dont see any improvement in a couple of days will increase my circulation .

Maybe I am keeping my lights on too long 7:00 am to 9:00 pm. the first hour and last hour is actinic only!

Ok guys how long do you keep your light on?

Lights on at Noon and off at 10:30 PM that way I can enjoy it at night. I also get some natural sunlight in the AM, thing is the tank looks nicer with the natural light.

Redid the aquascaping in the tank today. Replaced the Maxijet 1200 with a new one and added some loc line (I ended up going with the link Greg provided to the E-bay auction). Not very happy, that thing cuts down on the flow big time. Tossed a MaxiJet 600 in there for the time being, next week I'll have to either replace the stock nozzle or figure something out, maybe plumb another maxijet in there.

Greg, how is the flow from yours?

So here's a before picture:

And an after:

Looks worse, imo. Glad to get rid of one soap dish, gotta get rid of the frags in the other one.

I did make some more room on the sandbed which is good because I have some frags on the way (The ones from the selling forum and a local friend is stopping by next weekend and is dropping off some pink candycane, an Acan frag and some Blasto Merletti to finish up a trade we did a while ago involving a micromussa. Also he has a little brother in law who is like 14 and has a 12 gallon nano so I'm gonna give him some frags).

I have decided once the upstairs office is complete I am getting another nano and am looking at both the Cadlights 22 gallon and the Finnex M-Tank 20 gallon. I will move the firefish, assesor and neon goby into that tank and pack it full of Frogspawn, Hammer and Torch, a total 100% Euphylia tank. The cadlights looks real nice.
Then I want a Banner Cardinalfish (The black and silver one) to go into the nanocube and that will be the last fish addition. I have to much algae with the number of fish I have in there now and the firefish is freaked out like 24/7. I had my hand in there today and could have petted him if I wanted to, the dartfish that forgot to dart. He could use some peace and quiet away from the always active flame angel and pseudochromis.

Enough ramblings from me, and FYI Smketyr is in mourning for the next few weeks... I hate Grossman about as much as Ron Turner (Schmuck ruined U of I football and walked into an Offensive Coordinator job!!!).

colin, are you saying your having problems with or without the locline? My flow has been good as far as i can tell. i think thats why my Xenia bit it. should have had it in less flow but instead it got blasted... So far everything i got from brian has been doing good... all the zoas are open and look cool. also added a purple tip anenome, flame angel and fire shrimp. they all apear to be doing well. the flame angel is all over the brine shrimp.... bought some tigger pods for the mandarin hoping they reproduce in the rockwork...

I decided to throw some chaeto in as well. stuffed it behid the rocks on the bottom of the tank... jus a a little added help for the nitrates.

Also, anyone having trouble with the magnet cleaner, try using the smallest mag available then turn it sideways. gets in every crevice and does an awesome job. havent had to put my hand in the tank to clean yet

New pics coming soon

Hey Greg,

Yeah with the locline the flow is really weak. It's strange considering the pump is new as well. Maybe that's the problem, I'll try to put the old pump back in there and see if it helps after I clean it.

You got a mandarin and a flame? Make sure your getting the flame enough algae based foods like Frozen Formula 2 or Frozen Pygmy Angel Food.

Can't wait to see pictures.

Guys,

Check out this link of the thread I started in the LPS forum. Its about my acan. I have a few pics as well. Is this bleaching? And what is bleaching for that matter?

Any help would be appreciated....

IMO it's not bleaching. Different light produce different color variations. Maybe it was totally purple when you bought it under MH but now has some white lines under PC's.

If it were bleaching it would happen in clumps affecting the entire coral, that looks way to symetrical to be bleaching.

If your worried move it to the sandbed and see what happens to the color....

Thanks brother. Everytime I see something the least bit out of the ordinary or a change in any way, I always assume the worst. Didn't even think of what the different lighting might do.
