Greg, Where did you get your cleaner crew from?

Colin,

I checked with premium Aquatics and they didn't have any crews put together. It was sort of "pay by the critter" option. About $2 a piece for the stuff.

Then I saw this on Blue Zoo:

Astraea---10
Cerrith---8
Nassarius---4
Nerite---4
Red Leg hermit----15
Scarlet Hermit---6

And its $50.00

Let me know what you guys think...

That's a lot of hermits to start with but otherwise a good deal. Wait until you get a diatom bloom (brown sand like algae on your sandbed and rock) before ordering, get that package and when the diatoms are gone maybe trade a couple off for a softie frag in your local club :)
Or contact Blue zoo and ask if you can substitute 4 of the Red Leg hermits for 2 more nassarius and 2 more nerite. That would be perfect.....

Will I still get a bloom even though the rock was fully cured? Also, there is a little something that looks like what you described (brown sand-like algae) on the sand already. Is that it or is it too soon?

Just talked to the guys at Blue Zoo. Substitutions are totally A-OK. I am going to wait until next wednesday and then order the crew.

Diatoms are a part of any new tank and the first phase towards tank maturity. Mine totally covered the sandbed, took the cleanup crew a week to put a dent in it. It goes away totally with the cleanup crew and good water quality (water changes).

That's great that blue zoo lets you sub items. I only started with 10 hermits and that was plenty.

so shrimps and crabs will not bother corals and stuff?

Some do and some don't...do some research and find out what works and what doesn't...

Research, Ha!
Thats what I got you guys for!

............................................................. I always research , but like to hear thoughts from "real" people with "real" experience.
The more i read the more contradictions I find!

Shrimps are basically harmless, things like Sally Lightfoots and Emerald crabs should be avoided if possible due to aggression when they get bigger.

OK so here is my first attempt at posting some picutres... Also, any idea what the green thing is in there? that was on one of the rocks wasnt sure if I should get rid of it or keep it... the hermits seem to enjoy it though

Pffff, you got me.... maybe repost that pic in another forum like the new to the hobby or reef discussion forum. Also get another picture from a new angle with it.

Is it plant like?

Yes thats halimeda, lucky you, good stuff!
that spongy stuff is def not aptasia could be a sponge or decaying matter!
looks good. like the tonga and rock!

Excellent point , I'll move them in a bit ,thanks for reminding me what a pain it is too clean glass when you dont have space <I will make eough space fo my magfloat or hand!

That reminds me! Is it true that you can get really sick from the toxins from zoos if you have cuts on your hand? Aren't zoos and zoas button polyps? Any truth to this?

Yes, there have been reports of illness caused by this...which brings up a good point about handling ANYTHING inside your tank...WEAR GLOVES...surgeons do it for good reason, so should you...never touch anything inside your tank without gloves on...do this and you shouldn't have an issue unless you like the taste of your zoos and zoas!! :lmao: :D
