New to the Nano reef

I've always heard it like Keh - toe.

The test kit should say for sure but mine is the same and I hold it flush against the white.

My test kits sound like yours...I hold the tube against the white background beside the colors...if you overlap the colors, the color spectrum will change due to differing colors blending together...

As for pronunciation, I've always heard it pronounced as Chay-Toe

thanks, i think im going to take some water to the LFS and have them test to be sure ... having a hard time telling if the nitrate is 0 or 5... ph is either 8 or 8.2..... would be nice if there was some sort of digital reader to test all these things

There ya go Greg...devise a device that will do that and you will be a millionaire overnight...no problem financing the hobby then!!

Quick side question...DIY sort of question...

I just spoke with my friend and he is giving me a bunch of chaeto tonight...my question is this...I'm sure I'll get more than will fit in my refugium...how can I get the rest in my tank but still contained...I don't have any egg crate so I can't do a box...I was thinking some sort of mesh bag...any ideas?

Mesh bag would work.

I also know someone with a tank like yours and has one of those food clips (kinda like a veggie clip with a suction cup) and he clip chaeto to that and keeps it trimmed.

Would just a small, nylon bag from the grocery store laundry isle work? I figure a little bigger is fine cause what part of the bag isn't used I can let hang over the back of the tank...that will also allow pods in and out of the chaeto...I can cut the zipper off and use a piece of string to close the bag...if the bag is small enough, this will allow the hole bag to just get thrown in to the tank...

I aways pronounced it chay-to and always held my tubes slightly away from the card! I could be wrong on both accounts, who knows!
but I think i am right about the test kits!

Guys,

I am having the same issue with testing. I do what the test kit says, then I hold it up and I can't tell what color it is and what corresponds on the card. It is driving me nuts. Is the pH right? Is it off? What is the ammonia level (this is worse because there is a calculation I have to do)? I have a Marine test kit from dr. F&S. Can anyone recommend an easier kit to use?

ok well i just got back from the LFS, they tested and all my levels are good. They actually held the tube a little away from the card as well... just had the white card as a background. so i think my nitrate and ph was never really an issue... jus a bit of inaccurate reading

Haha, I think Kingfisher has it right. I go to my LFS any chance I get. "Uh, honey......I need to ask the LFS guy a question and his phone is busy, I'll be right back."

Yup, I have one hunded bucks burning a hole in my pocket to stock my tank!

Mental note: .........................must resist, ...................must be patient......................must ............control ............myself.

Perfect, Still planning on order the bluezoo cleaner crew?
If you ordered it Wendsday for Thursday delivery it would be perfect.

LoL your too good... 2 percula clowns are now in my tank... i went with the intention of getting a shrimp or 2 and ended up with the fish...

I actually went to 2 LFS's one is a bit smaller and they said with the nanocube they would of added fish after 3 days.. they mentioned something about it helping the cycle... The other place where i bought the fish said generally a couple weeks but since I havent had any spikes they would go ahead and add fish now... shrimp later

So far so good... I think I have been leaving my light on a little to much (13hrs). noticed the color of the rock getting a reddish brown tint to it and a bit of the same on the sand bed. I was thinking of cutting light back to 8 hrs...

Good pick on the clowns, they are hardier and can withstand more than shrimp and other fish.

Ouch, Colin. I will get the pics up ASAP.

Yeah, I am going to go with the Blue Zoo cleaners. I actually ordered them last night, but they won't ship until monday, so they won't get here until tuesday. That will be about a week. The water quality is excellent, I think....what parameters are you guys getting for the main tests, pH, Alk, Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate? (I spoke too soon in bad mouthing the Red Sea test kit...I just needed a little understanding in reading the results.....oh yeah, the instructions in my kit actually say to hold the tube a few inches from a white background).

And the bloom is in full effect and will be providing tons of food for the crew.

Also, just to let you guys know how excited I am about this endeavor, let me briefly tell you about the dream I had last night:

I lived in this community where every house had its own huge SW aquarium, but there was a large, clear "pipe-like" system that connected everyone's tanks. So, everyday you would see new and interesting things in your tank, because things were constantly migrating there from other peoples tank. And things you puy in your tank would move to other peoples tanks, eventually coming back through yours.
