Hey Steve,

Good luck with the flower pot.

When are you getting your order from Purecaptive? I am going to do another order this week with Bryan. Are you just getting zoa's or some other goodies as well?

well another trip to the LFS today ended up in 9lbs of LR and a nice little Xenia. Did some scaping and i think its much better with the new rock. I have the xenia on the sand bed now but will move it a little higher as it continues to acclimate. Do you think i should glue it to the rock or try and wedge it somewhere? I will have some pix up tomorrow.

Colin,

Appreciate the good wishes with the flower pot. But the reality is that I need to have someone who knows their stuff to take care of it. The LFS that told me even experts have trouble with it told me they would give me a store credit for 1/3 what they sold it for.
Needless to say, I am contemplating taking a $$$ loss for the sake of this beautiful thing.

Bryan is sending my stuff overnight on thursday so it is here on friday (1/19). I got the 2 zoas (# 6 and 21 from the site) and I also bought the blue/green calustrea from the hard coral page.

You were right on. he has fantastic specimens. I was even thinking about grabbing those neon green fern-looking things from the soft coral page on purecaptive's site.

I think every hobbyist should have to go through will-power strength training. I was at the LFS today to get salt water for changes and I saw a few firefish. They are really great looking in person. It took all of my energy to leave with just the water and marine plankton.

Is it just a loose stalk? if so it will eventually attatch (in like a week or less) if you stick it in a hole or crack.

As for glue there are two things to use and I don't think it has been mentioned before.

1. Loclite or another brand of Super Glue Gel. Never use the regular, always use the Gel.

2. Aquamend. Home Depot, paint section, $3. Or you can go and pay $14 for underwater epoxy at your LFS ;)
It's a 2 part epoxy, outside blue & inside white. Tear a chunk off and mix it with damp fingers until it turns white. It can cure in the water. It's great to use for things that have a solid skeleton base (frogspawn, hammer, candycane) or if it has a little bit of rubble or rock (zoa frags, softies like if your xenia has a little piece of rock with it). Won't work on the xenia if it's not attatched to rubble.

Soft to Hard - Super Glue Gel

Hard to Hard - Aquamend

Can't wait to see the pictures

Steve,

If you can't find any intrest by Monday I'd take the loss. Good Luck :)

I was even thinking about grabbing those neon green fern-looking things from the soft coral page on purecaptive's site.

What line?

Top line far right he has a green toadstool leather (I got mine from him, awesome coral. High flow good water conditions).

Middle line he has some Neon green green star polyps. Another great coral to get that would do well in your tank.

Bottom right picture is cloves. Avoid them like the plauge. They do not ship well at all. If you find a piece locally you can pick them up but I actually got a couple polyps as a freebie from Bryan last time I ordered just to try them and they never opened.

Here's the site for anyone following along:

Nice choices with the zoa's, love the greens :)

I am looking at his favia under the hard coral section. He has other favia's he's gonna get pictures of for me so we'll see.

I can't remember if is was in this thread or not and I can't find it...

Did someone post a link a while back to a web site that sold livestock specifically for nano's like nano starfish and such?

Ohh, Colin,

You may want to wait a few days before ordering with Bryan (unless you see something you want to grab already on the site). he said he is probably going to be putting up new livestock pics shortly...likely this week).

Also, smketyr, how do you know if the flower pot is eating? I put a little squirt of the marine plankton in a bowl with some tank water, sucked it into the baster and slowly released it over the flower pot. The frills looked like they were almost grabbing it and then the polyps pulled in a bit. And sorry to hear about the radiation treatment. I hope you are well. I had a scare a few months back where I had to go in for scans and such. So I wish you good health.

Steve,

I don't think I ever seen it feed. I think it may be nocturnal. I feed before lights out and have the pumps on a timer to shut off for an hour. You may want to target feed dt oyster eggs and leave it at that.

The more I think about it, you should keep the flower pot. It is healthy you are anal about your water parameters. If you can keep the clowns out of it, why not! I bought my with out knowing anything about it and learned as I went on. I have had it over a year and there has been some recession and I have noticed some grow back in areas and that is not suppose to happen. The flower pot may have a better chance with you than someone else if you are taking good care of it! If it shows some signs of receeding then trade or sell it.

Thanks for the concern. I have a tumor on my spine. Tests have not been able to tell if it is cancer. It has grown and the are treating it. I am in alot of pain, but I manage it well. It is a reminder that l am not God, and I live life with a different set of eyes now.

smketyr

my friend, I cannot imagine what you are going through...again, good heatlth to you. I wish you the best.

The coral is actually very active! I will hang on to it until I have to set it free.

But, I am super anal about my water parameters, temperature, etc....the woman even gives me **** aout it(" you spend so much time with that cube").

I don't think I will keep the pot for long, but while I have it, I will make sure I take extra special care of it.

I ust bought a book on marine inverts and am learning what I need to.

Hopefully it will be enough.

Steve,

I know what you mean with the other half! I am lucky she loves the tanks as much as I do. She has the bigger tank bug right now.

I would hang on to the flower pot, keep doing what you are doing and enjoy it!

Tom

Thanks Tom.

The more I read, then more comfortable I feel. The Flower Pot really is a magnificent thing. I will try to care for it for as long as I can.

Yeah, the woman is the reason I got it. We saw it at the LFS, and she wanted it. That, coupled with the guy telling me I could care for it, convinced us to get it.

Thanks Colin. I will have to check that stuff out.

Tom,

How often did you feed your flower pot?

And guys,

How often do you feed your fish? I have the clowns and down the road I may grab a firefish and a YWG. So, I was wondering what you guys fed them and how often.

And, the blue green calustrea...how often would I feed him? I assume the marine plankton I got I can use for the calustrea.

Thanks guys.

Steve

What a great thread. I just found it and read the whole thing. The excitement of a new tank in the box. Tons of questions popping into your head, information overload on all the info in the forums, a little doubt about can I actually do this. The painful wait for the tank to cycle. Finding the first life in the form of hitch hikers on the LR. Your first corals and fish! The loss of a fish, impulse buying after listening to a LFS. Trying to decide what is best for a creature that doesnt belong in your environment. Excitement, frustration, joy keep it going. I wish you all the best of luck.

It is very important not to overfeed !
and food that is not eaten will eventually turn into nitrates. I would say once a day and what the can eat in two minutes!A variety of food is good .Quality flakes, pellets, frozen mysis shrimp
When feeding frozen foods make sure you rinse all those frozen juices out under the faucet before feeding. those juices will cause big nitrate problems!

Ok ,so I broke down and decided to pick up some cleanig crew for the algae.
Three tiny blue legged hermits and one Emerald crab. I couldn't believe it as soon as they hit the bottom the started on the algae!
