New to the Nano reef

PC lights will cause more algae than MH, VHO or T5s...this is just because of the spectrum of light they produce...so, if you wanna keep PC lights ya gotta get use to it... ;)

The feather dusters look great...looking to get some for my tank also...

Huge face in front of the tank? Who, me? :D

Firefishy came back out while I was in the shower. Swimming along like a champ. Thank god. I had the pump turned off and I was looking everywhere and couldn't find him. It was odd, b/c the clowns never hide at night. So, as soon as I couldn't find the firefish, I thought something was wrong.

Ok,off the pic up the mushy rocks and palys from a local reefer. Pics, pics, pics, when I get back.

Well folks...let me teach you all a lesson...I have been talking with my accounting division (the wife  ) about the money appropriations to get my 75g build started...she isn't thrilled about the amount...like a $1000 (or so - give or take ;) ) is a lot for a reef...anyway...

She decided that it will be cheaper if I upgrade the nano in the bedroom to a 30g tank so she can have me put a lot more xenia in there for her to look at...I've never been satisfied with the 10g since I put it up, cause I wanted a couple more fish and room for lots more corals...so anyhow, she twisted my arm until I agreed to upgrade the tank and slowly get stuff for the 75g between now and tax return time...geesh...

So the lesson of the day is this...GO BIG GO EARLY!! This is actually a saying me and some of my other paramedic friends use referring to the sizes of needles we prefer to use on pts!! :D But, it can apply to tank sizes in this case as well...go with the biggest size tank that you can reasonable afford in the beginning so you aren't stuck with the added expense of upgrading later...

Me, I'm lucky...I am trying to get a 30g tank for free from a fellow local reefer...if not free, I'm positive it will cost much less than what it would at a store...and I can use the 10g as my sump...or get a 20g Long for the sump and use the 10g as my quaranteen tank...but I ordered another 96w Quad light setup and some moon lights today...tomorrow I go to Lowes to get lumber, plumbing and electrical supplies to build the stand although she is under the understanding we are going there to primarily look at a replacement dishwasher!! :lmao: ;) Shhhh... :)

Guess now I need to have an admin change the title of my nano thread so I can showcase my new build once I start it... :)

Alright, as promised:

Mushys are on a small rock in the front right, kind of tough to see and the tan palys are near the flower pot, also a little tough to see in the pics.

Thanks...now, what to Ninja from colins tank to fill the 30g... :D

I got some show sized aiptasia anemone's that you can have :)

(Actually I don't, I've been nuking them every time I see one pop up).

Thanks guys. I just got back from dinner with the womans family and the mushrooms have opened up huge. Never expected that. Getting ready to feed now. Just watching that is amazing. The orange fungia has a thousand little tentacles and, even if a bit of food falls near the edge of it, all the little tentacles move it to the center and the mouth opens up and eats it. Way cool.

I think that is the only thing we will not be fragging. :p

Well you guys better come and ninja my tank before I kill everything off.

Saturday I looked and noticed that some hermit knocked my red acan lord into my green candycane. Needless to say the lord won. Lots of damage, we'll see how it heals.

Then I wake up Sunday and look at the tank and a blue ric fell down onto the chalice and the chalice tore it up. I am sure it's a goner, really slimed over. Note to Colin- Do a better job mounting everything....

The I noticed my neon green toadstool wasn't opening the last 3 days. I knew something was wrong with the water quality. Did a water change and pulled out the clump of filter floss I put in last week. Noticed "something else" back there. I then pulled out about 4 more clumps of filter floss that I didn't realize were in there. It is obviously a collection of smaller bits of floss that fall apart from the main clump and form a new clump over time.
This is the second time this has happened to me. Note to Colin 2- Make sure you get all of your nasty floss out of there every week.

Luckily I have a perfect cure for the filter floss problem and plan to start work on that this week. I'll post pics when I get it finished.

Let the insults begin.... :)

Welp, I found 3/4 of my firefish near the rear of the tank today. Last time I saw him alive was yesterday morning. He had been hiding in a little hole under a live rock and chilling, but no more. Is it possible the clowns killed him? When he was out of his hole, they didn't really bother him.

Oh well, should I try again with another one, or leave it be for now? He was only $12 but I really like him.

Oh, I just did a water param check last night and everything was perfect. Should I keep an eye out for an ammonia spike because the firefish died in the tank? I did get the vast majority of the carcass out.

I doubt you'll get an ammonia spike from it if you caught it that quick. When were you going to do your next water change? Might be a good idea to move it up a couple days if it's coming up or to even do a smaller water change (3 gallons) now if your not supposed to do it until the weekend.

I'd hold off on another for right now.

Any cause of death? Did he not eat enough and starve or did it look like something took a bite out of him?
When my clown killed mine he nipped the back fins of the firefish first, were your firefishes fins o.k. last you saw?

The fins looked OK yesterday. But he did look a little chewed up, which I chalked up to the cleaning crew. And he was eating a bit when he was out of the hole. I even went so far as to squirt a little food at the entrance to his den when he wasn't out for feeding.

I was going to do a 20% water change on Sunday morning. But I won't have a chance to even get water until friday afternoon (or if I have court) saturday morning. So, it may be tough to do even a partial change until then. I have on hand about 3/4 of a gallon of SW right now. I just (15 minutes ago) did a full test on all params and everything was cool.

Now I am a bit worried because I have the red goni and two zoa frags coming tomorrow from Bryan. I was keeping the 3/4 gallon to add SW when I take out for the acclimation of these guys.

Thoughts....???

Don't worry about the water change, the firefish was so small and you caught it fast enough I'm sure it's fine, saving the water for acclimation is a good idea :)
