New to the Nano reef

Steve sorry to hear about the firefish. Colins advice is sound. I still have not seen my goby since it went into the tank.

Sorry about your loss slukach, usually that type of clown are pretty mellow, so I don't know if he was the culprit ! Had he showed any aggression towards him?

Not to change the subject , but got something new .Can you guys ID it for me? hope I made a good choice ! I think it is some sort of trumpet or candy cane.
Little dissapointed about the LFS, they know their fish but not corals . They just got a shipment of 24 pc and were floating the bags in the tank .They were not sure what half the stuff was.
Let me tell you I was like a kid at a candy store!

eaglesrx, could be!
They are the right color but mine were just put in and have not really opened fully! I will keep you posted ,thanks.

King, post a pic when it is open. It looks like a candy cane but with smaller heads. I have something similar and the name escapes me now. It is very hardy. The tulip anemones love this thing, and I am forever trying to rid it of them.

Tom

King, I had a frag of Blasto Merletti that looked the same as that.

Might be a candycane but my money is on the merletti. Post a pic when it's open, the 2 look similar when open but you can tell them apart.

Colin, I do believe you got it right. Merletti is what I could not remember.

King, yeah the are pretty, pretty nasty to get rid of. Multiply fast. I nuke them with kalk paste daily. I am also really good a flicking them of rock with an exacto knife. I don't think I get them all tho, becuase they com back. I got mine as a hitchhiker on some palys. I thought cool I like the looks, I should of got rid of it or passed on the paly's.

Change of subject. Ok, I am really considering buying an Oceanic Bio Cube, 29 gallon. I think, and help me if I am wrong, that for the chambers I need a heater (which one), pruigen, phosphate remover, and chemi pure. A hydor flo, and an addtional mini jet for the the dead spots. An upgrade to a maxi 1200 to swap out for the stock pump, live rock rubble. Anything else?

For the live rock, I going to experiment with a combination of fiji (which I have), some homemade rock, and possibly ten pounds of tampa bay saltwater live rock and sand. This weekend I am going to try and make some DIY rock. I have been reading about since I started getting into reefs. I will use the established rock to seed it. I want the TBS rock for some diversity. Any thoughts?

Tom

Tom - You should sell them like PP did in the CMAS forum :)

Also I guess a powerhead went wonky and dumped several gallons of saltwater onto Dragonfish's carpeted floor last night. They figured it out this morning and he stayed home shopvacing the carpet. No idea on casualties or # of gallons but he said it flooded the living room and downstairs below the tank. I know his SPS was up high so I bet those are a gonner. I swear, if that happened to me that would be it, you would be a very happy guy because I'd show up on your doorstep with buckets.... :)

Tom, the 29 is a "model designation", your really getting a 23 gallon tank. Someone actually measured the amount that went in and confronted Oceanic and that "model designation" was their b.s. excuse.

Good chamber idea's. Gotta get something to catch the debris in the back like filter floss (I use Walmart pillow stuffing).

I started using phosban to clear up some cyano and still use it.

As for the heater I would get a stealth so you don't have to worry about it falling down into the back chamber above the "water line" on a more traditional heater. Of course I have the "traditional" heater that you are not supposed to fully submerge and haven't had any problems. I got an Ebo-Jagr 100W.

I remember reading about the model designation, the eight gallon holds something like 6.5 g or so. One question, do the back chamber stay full or is that where the evaporation takes place? I am thinking an auto top off as well.

Tom

The surface skimmer keeps the water in the display constant and the evaporation does show up in the back chambers (mainly the return pump chamber is the best indicator).

I personally have zippo evap right now, in the summer months I have to top off midweek.

Do you dose kalk? That is part of the reason I am thinking about an auto top off. Right now I dose kalk with an old water bottle, hooked up to the venturi port on the maxi jet.

Ok , if it is Blasto Merletti. Are they a hardy coral ? Please tell me yes!
As for the biocube I have, I kept the stock powerhead left out the bioballs and placed LR rubble in the center chamber instead. I might get a more powerful PH ,we will see!

Oh yeah, I will warn my friend about the tulip anemones!

Yeah, easy to care for, I "had" one, got it as a freebie once, didn't mount it that day just put it in the sandbed and a hermit must have moved it. Found it a week later behind a rock dead. I have the worst luck.....

Check out the LPS forum, post the pic there for an ID and care/feeding tips.

I'll have to check it out though, I have a friend who I traded some stuff to and he is hooking me up with a merletti frag. Gotta mount this one :)

Guys,

I just got a PM from Cquarium. I think the guy was busting my balls. It said, "anything coming from an attorney's mouth I'd consider a compliment"...with a llittle face at the end...not so much smiley and not so much mean. Not sure what to make of it. I did post, on one of the other forums on here, a thank you for informing about Cquarium, since I was going to drop some coin on there for the red goni (which will be here by noon, coincidentally) and a few other things.

Jeez, I wonder if he is a little ****y?

Ok, waiting for my purecaptive shipment, and then heading off to check out a LFS that has a "coral lagoon" with a ton of variety as I understand it. I took the day off of work, since I have been working like a madman lately. Ok, I'm lying, I am working here at home drafting documents. Well, I did want to take the day off. I am just not going to the office.

Please....stop me before I buy again.
