New to the Nano reef

King, just read the link. The guy menard, know his stuff. He used to own one of the better lfs in Chicago. I hope it is not dyed. Even so it is a nice looking piece. If it was toxic, the polyps would not extend. Don't worry and enjoy it.

jeez, you guys have all sorts of new additions. One of my favorite LFS's is having a moonlight madness sale tonight from 6-8pm. 25% off of all fish, coral, inverts and supplies. I saw a few really nice pieces last week when I was there and they said they were getting in a giant shipment for the sale. So, if all goes well, I will be picking up some stuff. Oh, the woman is even giving me a hundred to spend there tonight....its my Valentines day present. I certainly don't mind being mushy when it comes with a hundo to spend at the LFS sale.

I'll be sure to post pics if I get anything.

King- Mine is a darker shade of green with purple hues, all I know is mine is more of a deepwater variety.
I'll see if I can get a pic of it.

Hey guys,

I grabbed 2 feather dusters and a blasto. Do the feather dusters have to be in the sand? Or could I insert them into the rock work?

Also, is adding RO/DI water to a tank the only way to lower salinity? I got back tonight and checked it before I did a water change and it was way high (the little indicator was up past 1.032 and it couldn't go any further. I did the water change and added some ro/di to it as well.

Pics as soon as I can....

No clue on the dusters, I think they can go in the sand. Is it King who is the duster expert?

What kind of blasto? Welsi or Merletti? (Post a pic).

Yeah adding RO/DI lowes the salinity but you don't want to do it all at once, it will shock your fish. Maybe every day take out a half gallon of water from the tank and replace with RO/DI. (Dump the RO/DI into the back chambers with the pumps off and let it kinda mix back there, don't dump it in the main display).

How did it creep up on you? Evaporation?
Keep rechecking it daily and see if it goes down.
Are you using the hydrometer or refractometer? refractometers are more reliable if calibrated correctly. Maybe a LFS close by has one they can test your water for you. Don't you get your water from the LFS? Next time go in there with a sample and get their readings.

re-posting Q's if someone could comment pls:

hi...few pgs back talking about kalk dosing, auto topoffs, etc

1) can anyone post pics and info about off-the-shelf systems people are using that they are having good success with? same for DIY type setups?

2) also, same for O-T-S or DIY h20 topoff systems?

3) either of these usually on either timers, continuous slow drips, or auto/float valves?

sorry, hope this thread is OK for these topics...seems the discussion bounces to lots of things. i like this post...just read about 10 pgs of it for the first time.

starting mine very very soon...need to make some choices on things i've never bought/incorporated before. my last tank was fishonly/liverock and just filters & skimmer... need some assistance on starting reef.

thx

smketyr -

thx...little by little...i hope to setup the tank within the next few weeks! I'll keep posting pics on progress in my red house link.

Ocean -

I've been following your build thread...great work on the basement I must say...although I still think you should just forgo the bar and make that a 200g in-wall setup... :lmao:

Anyway...starting a reef is much the same as starting a FOWLR tank...setup, cycle, etc. are all the same really...the thing that really makes the difference with a reef is the water parameters/quality...with a FOWLR tank you can slack on the water changes and such and the fish won't kick it...a reef on the other hand will very rapidly crap out on you if the water parameters swing to far in to the negative (especially in a nano)...everything happens super quick in a nano, so make sure you are diligent about water changes and tank maintenance...

Once you have that down, you should be golden for going reef...like I said, not a whole lot different from a FOWLR when you initially start out...

Smketyr is the kalk master.

I looked at this site a while ago when i thought about getting an auto topoff, has a good FAQ section:

Also watch out for that smketyr, he lives close by, once you get some stuff he'll add you to his ninja list.

Has anyone ever been stung by frogspawn? It just happened to me while I was doing some rearranging and it really hurt. Damn.

OK, here is a pic of the blasto and the feather dusters and also of a new green lobo(??, i think) that I grabbed recently:

Ohhh, glad it made it into one of the pics....can anyone ID the green tube-like thing in the last pic attached to the rock in the upper left area?

And sorry, but the pic doesn't do the blasto much justice. The polyps have a red ring around each of them, and they are just vibrant. About 15 polyps. Also, the tentacles have already extended which may be why it looked a little blurry.

I am reaching saturation point, coral-wise. I had to do some moving around yesterday and there was just enough room in the tank. So, I don't think I will be adding anymore for a little while at least. I want to put another fish or two in there, though.

Any ID on the green worm-like, tube looking thing in the last pic on the upper left?

Probably just some sort of macro algae or plant forming.

It doesn't move right?

Might be cool to see what it grows into, could probably get a better ID when it does grow out.

Those dusters look cool. I've never had one, mainly because I've never seen a good looking one locally.

Time for a full tank shot.... :)
