New to the Nano reef

Feathers are doing great. I love how they retract and then come back out slowly. And the way they are colored, it looks like a firework slowly exploding when they come out.

BTW, I found someone on the PARC who has extra chaeto that they are going to give me. Pretty cool. What did people do before the internet???

What is your plan for the chaeto,Slukach?
I originally had placed a wad of it in my biocube . I figured it would be a great nitrate, phosphate export. It seemed to do well the first few weeks. It had doubled in size so I pruned it back.
The last few weeks it seemed to be wilting so I just pulled it all out all together!

I have some in my 55g tank that is thriving under basic florescent lighting . I don't understand why it stopped growing under the pc lighting!

Let me know how yours does.

smketyr, I noticed several aptasia in my FOWLR 55g so I decided to go with the natural method instead of "Joes Juice".Two weeks later there are no aptasia to be found. Plus the shrimp are just great to watch.

KF,

I was just planning on sticking the chaeto in a nylon sock (as recommended by HR, I believe) and putting it somewhere where it gets some light and can do its thing, so to speak.

I see , as long as it is growing it should benefit the tank! If you can find a good place for it you might not even need the sock. It does hold togetheth pretty well.On my larger tank I use it to hide my protein skimmer makes it look a little more natural.
good luck with it.

I recommended the nylon sock to help hide it behind the live rock in the back...and, it allows the chaeto to grow horizontally behind the live rock instead of all over the place as long as you keep it pruned back...if you let it get out of control, it will be just that...all over the tank...mine is growing under PC lighting and it goes all over the place and grows like mad!!!

Well I have joined the ranks of the all-in-ones. My new Oceanic BC-29 should be in tommorrow. I document the build and share it with the group.

Tom

I had to lower the pagoda cup and in doing so I had to rearrange every thing else in the tank .
What do you think?

here are some pics of the new setup and the individual corals . I am really liking this reef thing I sort of wish I got the 24g setup now.

Halimeda, Halimeda sp. thrives much in the same way as the beautiful Corraline Algae. It incorporates a hard calcium carbonate skeleton within its living tissue. Because of this hard coating, Halimeda has a natural protection from predation. Halimeda grows in many parts of the world including the infamous Great Barrier Reef and in the waters surrounding the Hawaiian Islands (from where it is harvested for PETSOLUTIONS.) Also known as Money Plant, Halimeda is made of a number of bladed sections that connect end-to-end to form a continuous strand. This low-maintenance plant does not require the pruning maintenance of other Marine Plants and does better when left to grow. It is tolerant of a variety of lighting and water conditions, but does not typically thrive if higher nitrates or phosphates are present. As a calcareous plant, it does grow relatively slowly in comparison to Caulerpa-family plants. Requiring excellent calcium levels for good growth, Halimeda makes an excellent decorative home aquarium addition.

Sounds like it may use up some calcium in your tank.

I'm suprised you had trouble with chaeto. Every once in a while I take my clump and hold it in front of a powerhead to get any gunk off of it, maybe that was your problem???
I'd try the chaeto again if you can find it.

Yeah that is totally the problem, cyano and chaeto fighting for the same thing (nutrients), same problem here, I blast mine at least weekly...wait that sounded dirty :)

hi...few pgs back talking about kalk dosing, auto topoffs, etc

1) can anyone post pics and info about off-the-shelf systems people are using that they are having good success with? same for DIY type setups?

2) also, same for O-T-S or DIY h20 topoff systems?

3) either of these usually on either timers, continuous slow drips, or auto/float valves?

sorry, hope this thread is OK for these topics...seems the discussion bounces to lots of things. i like this post...just read about 10 pgs of it for the first time.

starting mine very very soon...need to make some choices on things i've never bought/incorporated before. my last tank was fishonly/liverock and just filters & skimmer... need some assistance on starting reef.

thx

lol, no :)

I have done some reading on them, if stressed they can drop their anemones, usually won't see much of them during the day for a while until they feel comftorable.
I'm a bot worried about my pseudo, he is a bigtime shrimp killer but hasn't bothered any crabs, hope he leaves this guy alone.

Also getting a coral from Bryan, either a Nepthea or Sinularia, both Neon green, he is gonne get me some pics soon.

Here's Bryans pic of the Nepthea he is going to frag a branch of it off for me.

Crazy thing is THE TANK LIGHTS ARE OFF IN THIS PIC. Only the sunlight is shinning in the tank, that's how bright this is going to be.

Come on Tuesday :) (It's also my 27th b-day on Tuesday so frag donations and monetary gifts can be sent, PM me for the address :) )
