New to this....Pics

I am trying my luck with some pictures with my Nikon D50. The only lens I have right now is a new 55-200 Nikon DX VR so these were taken with that on a tripod. I have the 18-55 on the way and am shopping for a macro. As i said, I am completly new to photography world and this is my first real attempt at some pictures and white balance editing in PhotoShop. I know this isn't the best lens for this but here goes. Any feedback would be great. Thanks..

you're off to a good start. Looks like you have some nice pieces too. Did you use a tripod?

Yes, I used a tripod and used the timer feature for the shots. Some are not a sharp or in focus as I think they could be. Not really sure why though.

Seeing as how you are already using a tripod and timer function, there are two likely explanations for your lack of focus. I notice that the ones which aren't very sharp are the ones where you are fairly close up. I'm guessing the camera is a few inches too close to the subject and is unable to focus that close. The "further away" shots are crisper. The other likely possibility is that you are not shooting straight through the glass. Shooting at an angle through glass introduces focus and clarity ruining distortion.

Got the 18-55 vr today. Here is a shot of one of my acans with it. I think it might be a little underexposed??
