New to Tucson.

Just wanted to intro myself, my name is Scott and I am moving down here from NJ. I actually have never stepped foot in Tucson yet, we are still on our drive down and am currently at the grand canyon. In NJ I like many of you used to have a slew of tanks, but my last one was a 57g rimless with a 5g tank built into the side of the stand and it was plumed in. That was taken down last week and is currently in storage. As I am not to sure how long I will be out here, at least 1 yr. I plan on either setting up a 16g nuvo or 30g jbj rimless. I did bring a little bit of sand, rock, mangroves, and some equipt I didn't sell in NJ. My plan is to do something small and my main goal as of now is to try to breed Banggaii Cardinals and have a few corals.

Where are good places to shop for livestock and dry goods? (sometimes not the same place)

Is anyone local to me? I will be living west of rt10 in the continental ranch area.

That's the sign pf a die-hard tank person. (I moved aquarium stuff across country when I came out here too.) Welcome to Tucson.
 
Thanks everyone. Ya, some of you locals might find me knocking on your doors to peek at your tank. Normally easy to find, wait till night then look for the places with blue lights glowing through the windows.
 
Welcome, I recommend simply elegant aquatics for livestock. The cardinal breeding sounds like a great product when you get it up I'll buy one. Very cool to have a locally bred fish. I have thought about raising my clown fish fry. I always feel bad when they have eggs but I just don't have the time.
 
Welcome to Tucson! +1 to Simply Elegant. You'll find a lot of help here at all the LFS. The Banggaii breeding sounds great! If you need any help or recommendations, send me a PM!
 
So while driving around a bit of Tucson today I stopped by simply elegant, oasis tropical fish, and GQ fish. I must say From my 1st impressions I am not impressed. People seemed friendly, but very limited fish and coral stock and the prices as 20-50% more than I would spend at home, and dry goods are non existent. A royal gramma should not cost more than $20 and in many cases $15. Simply elegant did have a few nice frags at a decent price. But for the most part it seems I would be better off payin the same if not less from liveaquaria and getting a 14 day guarantee wit it.

Is there no mega reef store around here that is not in a strip mall?

Well when it's time for me to get things going hopefully some of you will be selling some frags or something.
 
Welcome, I've noticed a substantial markup on some fish but not all the time. It is really hit or miss. Unfortunately there isn't a huge reefing population in Tucson so there is no mega reef store.
I think most of the LFS give a guarantee but I'm not sure.

Nope no mega reef store. I've been to a few in Phoenix and they are about the same as here. We are about due for a frag swap that is a good chance to pick-up some nice pieces usually auction style. SEA has always made it right with anything I have got from them if I had a problem. Don't miss Gary's fish-o-rama He's mostly on CL. Reefahaulics anonymous meets behind his place on Fridays at 8
 
Sorry, not getting notifications..

Move went ok, stuff finally came on fri morning, big 18wheeler. Luckily 2neighbors saw my wife and I die in the heat and hopped in to help.

So after getting our stuff in and seeing what room I have I think I am leaning towards the 16g nuvo. The 30g jbj would be great, more room to work with in the tank and much more options for skimmers in the back again because of more room. I also hate paying for the led lights that come with the nuvo as I won't need them. I brought my kessils. Hopefully within a week or so I'll be ordering the tank. Gotta shop around or pricing.
 
Not to sure. Love sps but they are hit or miss with me. I have great success wit some and just down right bad luck with others.

So if it's the 16g I will be much more limited. Zoas/plays, rics, dendro, frogspawn/hammer.

30g would be better to also add sps or maybe a nice toadstool.

Things I know I want non coral. Banggaiis, mangroves, and a long spine urchin.
