Hey gang, has anyone felt the impact with their electric bill recently, the higher rates are ridiculous, Not much to do as far as the fish tank goes, all the equipment must be always running.... please comment.
Thx

My next bill will drop from about $150 to right around $60-$70 and that's without taking anything away. Check my sig for all the tanks I have. On the 180 I still have 2/400 watt MH and 2/ 160watt VHO, the 75 I have 4 160 watt VHOs, the 60 gal I have 2/110 watt VHO, the 20 gallon 2/110 watt VHOs all on 10 hour light cycle plus all the normal skimmers/pumps/reactors.

I live in a 2 bedroom apt:rolleyes: ..my bill has always averaged $350,. My last bill was $458.!!:eek2: :eek1: My A/C had a problem though..and never shut off.

That is crazy, Indiana must have low rates for power consumption.
Freed, ever since we've experienced hurricanes, everything has gone up in florida, and the electricity more than ever. Waterfaller, my last bill was 223. For me that was a big difference from what I usually pay which is 165. I know we used the air a little more than average because of the lack of rain and being so freaking warm.
Any others, please share.

Same here, last bill was our highest ever, $400. My neighbor has a similar size house and better insulation / attic space and no fish tank and his was $360 so I don't feel like my tank is a huge contribution. Surely some though. I also have a swimming pool with two pumps that run a fair amount of time per day...

We need to harness all this %&!%%$!! sunlight that is hitting our houses! I wish solar panel systems were more affordable. But my understanding is that they run in the ballpark of $12K to $18K and have some significant maintenance costs as well. There are some tax breaks available but I don't think those are all that much help...

yeah, our bill has been averaging 320 and then our last bill was just 185??? i have a feeling they made a mistake reading the meter and next months bill will be a shocker!

I was up $40 this month over last year too. Now this is the first summer that I have been running tanks...but my little tanks cannot be using too much power.

Wow, it's hard for them to take wrong meter reading now, I know they already installed digital meters, that way they cannot make mistakes, now we have no way to argue with customer service. Solar panels for me would not be an option anymore, we should write to our congressman and have look into, it's beyond belief to pay that much money for electricity...

I would love to do solar at the point where I could cover the roof of my house in solar....seems like it would keep it cooler and make some money at the same time.

Call your electric company and ask about On Peak/Off Peak or Time of Day meters. If you have one installed the Off Peak KWH charge is only $0.01905 per KWH. That's less than two cents per Kilowatt Hour. Right now every one here usually pays 7.4 cents per the first 200 KWH they use a month. After that they pay 6.162 cents per KWH for the next 300 KWHours. After that every additional KWHour is 5.707 cents per.

This works out great for me as I am on 2nd shift and use most of my electricity during the Off Peak hours of 9PM-7AM

On Peak hours are a different story though. All On Peak hours(7AM-9PM) cost 11.491 cents per KWH. This is where they get you if you have a Time of Day meter. So far since August 3rd, when I had it installed, I have used 1009 Off Peak KWH and 203 On Peak KWH. With the $10 charge for the meter per month, which is normally $6 for regular meters, my total is about $53 for over 2 weeks of use which will drop even more with the cooler weather forecasted for the next 10 days. The A/C is what used up most of the 203 KWH On Peak hours.

Weekends are all Off Peak hours as well so that's a bonus too.

No such programs offered by FPL in south FL at least. Actually, they do, but no human regardless of hours of work could realistically use it. I don't know about Orlando area.

Don't understand what you mean by this. Please explain.

Freed,

Did you switch your work to second shift just to save $$$ on your power bill or do you just happen to work second shift? I would like to save that kind of money but dont' have the option of switching my work schedule. If I every build a house I'm going to look pretty hard into geothermal cooling and solar power. Some states up north acutally let you sell your extra power back to the power grid and you can get payed for going solar.
